Why did Joe Biden give his German Shepherd Major away? WH gets new pup Commander
Days ahead of Christmas, President Joe Biden welcomed a new canine member to the White House as an early present. In a recent tweet, POTUS introduced the German Shepherd puppy named Commander, as he noted, "Welcome to the White House, Commander." In another tweet, Biden shared a video montage of Commander playing or enjoying a lazy stroll with him and Jill Biden. "Meet the newest Biden," the president captioned the video.
The addition of a new puppy to the family happens after Biden's other dog Major was booted from the White House, over major behavioral concerns. Major Biden had been quite a naughty doggo, with multiple biting incidents reported in the past few months. The POTUS and the First Lady's attempt to school the dog fell short even with the help of professional dog trainers. Ultimately, the decision to remove him from the White House was taken after thorough consultations with dog trainers, animal behaviorists and veterinarians. He is likely to live a quieter life now with the Bidens' family friends.

The year has not been a good one for the canine members of the White House. In March this year, Major and his companion Champ were sent back to the Biden family home in Delaware following two biting incidents. Tragedy struck in June 2021, as Biden shared the heartbreaking news of the passing of his older dog, Champ.
After his partner-in-crime crossed the rainbow bridge, Major Biden returned to the White House, only to get involved in another biting fiasco. Eventually, it was decided that Major Biden would live a happier and more peaceful life away from the White House.
The introduction of Commander, who is 3.5 months old now, was met with immense cheer and warmth by the internet users, as the young pup managed to melt hearts with his charmingly good looks and hilarious antics. Comedian Kathy Griffin retweeted Biden's video with Commander, saying, "I love President Biden and I love Commander."
Famous social media account The Oval Pawffice tweeted a fictional statement from Commander after he gained the status as the First Dog of the United States. "Frens, my older brwoofer Major gave me a tour of the White House and told me all about Champ too. Then we went to the South Lawn where we did something he calls “fetching zoomies”. I love it! He explained that this is actually our personal dog park. Wuuuf! Wuuuf! - #Commander," the tweet said.
Another said, "Looks like President Biden has a new pup and his name is Commander. Is he adorable or what?"

Meanwhile, the Bidens previously hinted at a new feline addition to the family, who is likely to arrive in January. Till he gets his catto sister, Commander will enjoy the White House compounds all to himself.
