As the violent invasion of Ukraine continues, former Russian spy Anna Chapman has thanked her fellow Russians for their 'patriotism.' In an Instagram post, she wrote in Russian, "I have never seen such a wave of patriotism and faith in our country among the Russian people in my entire life. Thank you for this.” Chapman also promoted her new clothing brand which she made out of love for her country, according to the same post. The clothes are created in Russia and honor the country's culture, according to the former Russian intelligence operative who was jailed on espionage charges in the United States in 2010.

The Instagram post appears to be different from the speech she gave on March 2 on a TED talk and shared on her Facebook page with an English translation. Earlier, she said, urging world citizens to put their differences aside, “unfortunately many people today have forgotten the joy with which Soviet and American soldiers embraced each other during the meeting on the Elbe River. United, we were able to stop the terrible war and prevent Hitler from creating an atom bomb.”

She went on to say, “how many more decades of conformations will we need? How many more human lives? And how much money from our federal budget until we understand that killing each other is pointless?” Chapman made no mention of Ukraine in her address, and it is unclear when it was captured. Even after her detention in the United States, she stated that she could not hate Americans. She remarked, “all I saw in their eyes was loyalty and decency. The real fight is not with others but within ourselves.”

Many people applauded the model, while others criticized her remark on social media. One commenter wrote, “what does patriotism and advertising of clothes have to do with it? I can’t connect it … Just a post about clothes.” Another remarked, “you will soon all drown in your patriotism.” “Oohhhhh .., Anna, do not confuse patriotism with rags.” yet another person remarked. Chapman had been working in real estate in New York when she was exposed as a Russian sleeper agent in 2010. As part of a major prisoner swap, she pled guilty to spying and was sent to Russia alongside nine other spies, according to Wikipedia
