'The Chi' Season 8 finally announces release date as it teases heaps of nostalgia with new teaser
'The Chi' is set to return to the South Side of Chicago for the last time. The drama series, created by the Emmy winner Lena Waithe, will return for Season 8 on May 22 on Paramount+, with 10 new episodes that will follow a weekly release schedule. The acclaimed series was renewed for its eighth season in May 2025, and it was later revealed that it would be the final installment of the title. First released in January 2018 on Showtime, the title centers on the residents of the South Side of Chicago whose lives become intricately intertwined.
The latest 20-second promo starts with a voiceover saying, "Life comes at you fast, whether you’re ready for it or not. Everything has to come to an end." It showcases how far Tiffany (Hannaha Hall), Victor (Luke James), and Jake (Michael V. Epps) have come, as it includes flashbacks to scenes from earlier seasons as well as clips from Season 8. The last chapter of 'The Chi' will be a memorable one as the official logline states, "As The Chi enters its eighth and final season and its coldest winter ever, life or death choices must be made. The question becomes, who is willing to make them? Legacy, conflict, joy, and pain. It all collides in the biggest, most emotionally riveting way ever seen this season on The Chi."
After 'The Chi' was picked up for Season 8, it joined shows like 'Dexter,' 'Weeds,' and 'Homeland' to become the second-longest-running series in the history of Showtime. It is only preceded by 'Shameless,' which was also set in the South Side of Chicago and ran for 11 seasons from 2011 to 2021. Following news that Season 8 would be the final installment, Waithe said in an official statement, "When I created The Chi, it wasn’t just about making a TV show — it was about owning our narratives and telling our stories with truth, care, nuance and complexity. It was about showing the soul of the South Side — the beauty, the pain, the grit, and the magic that lives in every block, and in every family. I am committed to delivering a final season that our Chi Family deserves," Deadline reported.
The series stars Jacob Latimore as Emmett Washington, Birgundi Baker as Kiesha Williams, Luke James as Victor 'Trig' Taylor, Shamon Brown Jr. as Stanley 'Papa' Jackson, Michael V. Epps as Jake Taylor, Hannaha Hall as Tiffany, and Jason Weaver as Rashaad 'Shaad' Marshall, among others. 'The Chi' is executive produced by Waithe (for Hillman Grad Productions), the co-showrunners Justin Hillian (for Hillianaire Productions), and Jewel Coronel (for Uncut Gems). Other executive producers are the rapper Common, Aaron Kaplan, Derek Dudley, Rick Famuyiwa, Naomi Funabashi, Rishi Rajani, Resheida Brady-Anderson, and James Rogers III.
