'When I was the most Beautiful' Episode 4 sees Ye-ji do her best to ensure that Ji-soo understands her choices. However, the more time she spends with Ji Soo, the more he is charmed by her. Her interest in ceramics also makes Ji Soo see her in a new light but none of this changes the fact that the man that Ye-ji is interested in is not himself but his brother. Of course, initially, Ye-ji tries not to be interested in either of them and just concentrate on learning from their father.

After hearing Hwan's mother speak ill of her family and going to the extent of saying she would have preferred it if she was an orphan, she ends up telling her that she is not in a relationship with Jin and that his mother shouldn't misunderstand their relationship. Of course, Jin's mother doesn't believe her, but this only makes her want to prove her wrong even more. When she hears from her cousin about Jin visiting her aunt, threatening her with legal action if she continued to be an obstacle in Ye-ji's path, she is troubled.

Everything Jin speaks to Ye-ji and when he explains his past, how he saw his father fall from a cliff and how that affected his life, she understands him better. However, this doesn't help her. In fact, she tells Jin that if he were to continue acting like this, she would have to leave everything that she has found in her life. Jin doesn't consider the position that she is putting herself in. He believes that she shouldn't give up on life just because of her past or her family. He believes that because of his own past and the crime that he believes he committed by cutting his father off the rope while they were mountain climbing.

Hwan's love for Ye-ji, however, is comparatively more innocent and it is also purely based on Ye-ji herself. Her situation, her past or the prejudice that she had faced all her life doesn't affect Hwan's feelings for her. He doesn't like her despite these things, but he just likes her. So when he sees Ye-ji listen to all the things that his mother had to say, Hwan believes that Jin should stop pursuing her and hurting her. Hwan is not aware of Jin's former girlfriend still clinging on to him with hopes of getting back together with him. Carie has gone to the extent of ruining Jin's racing team and has manipulated his team members into betraying him. So if she were to learn of Ye-ji, things will only get far worse for her.

However, when Jin feels down about his team betraying him, Ye-ji helps him deal with the situation. She tells him to understand that the people left not because they hated him, but because they had to. When Hwan hears her comforting his brother, he realizes that he has no chance with her. Yet, he attempts to confirm her feelings one last time. When Ye-ji struggles and even tells him that she will leave him, Hwan comes to a decision. He may be incapable of moving on from Ye-ji, but he realizes that his brother was partly right. Ye-ji needs an adult to support her and he is incapable of doing so. Instead, Hwan decides to bury the hatchet and tells his brother to not run away again. He wants to ensure that his brother will not break Ye-ji's heart like their mother broke their father's.

Once he gets a response from his brother, Hwan accompanies Ye-ji to receive a life-changing proposal — that of becoming a part of their family. Hwan might not be the reason why, but he understands and that's how the three men in Jin's family welcome Ye-ji to be their family. However, they do all of this without being aware of her past or that of her family. So when Hwan's mother meets her and asks her to sign a prenup or take the risk of being exposed, all the happiness that Ye-ji had felt at being asked to belong to Hwan's family comes crashing down. She remembers how her father had died and her mother attempting to runaway.

Probably hoping for clarity from her mother, she tries to visit her in prison but her mother refuses to accept visitation. So Ye-ji decides to go along with Hwan's mother's condition and signs the prenup. We see Hwan walk Ye-ji down the aisle as she doesn't have her family with her and he gives her away to his brother. All of this, during the wedding rehearsal. The wedding does take place, but not before Carie attempts to ruin the moment for Ye-ji. She might have succeeded too if not for Hwan and this really symbolizes the role that he might play in Ye-ji's life. Someone who protects her, even if it is from his own brother.

'When I was Most Beautiful' will air on MBC on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9.30 pm KST. It will be available on Viu outside South Korea.
