What happened in 'The Voice' Season 23 Episode 12?
Blake started the knockouts by telling Reba that having her as a guest advisor was like coming full circle for him. The first knockout match was between Tasha Jessen and Noivas, who was previously on Chance's team. Noivas rehearsed 'I Put a Spell on You' and impressed Reba with his stage presence and range. Tasha rehearsed 'Take Me to Church' which was a tough choice, but Blake thought it showed off her talent well. The coaches had mixed opinions, with Niall leaning towards Tasha, Chance being a fan of Noivas, and Kelly liking both. Blake ultimately chose Noivas as his winner, but Niall used his steal to bring Tasha back to his team.
Kelly's team rehearsed with Reba for Marcos Covos and ALI's performance of 'Best Part' and 'Jesus, Take the Wheel' respectively. Reba advised ALI to emphasize the lyrics heavily, while she got close to Marcos on stage to help him connect to the song through his emotions. Blake praised ALI for their intention in the song, while Niall noted that Marcos always stays in control. Chance thought ALI was an amazing vocalist, but Marcos was a bit shaky at the beginning. Kelly chose ALI as the winner, as they moved her deeply, although she loves them both for different reasons.
Niall chose Gina Miles and Kate Cosentino to compete in his first knockout pairing as his 'two female character singers.' Gina sang 'Somebody That I Used to Know' and dedicated her performance to her dad. Reba was surprised by her powerhouse vocals compared to her quiet personality but noticed some enunciation issues. Kate played the guitar for her jazzy rendition of 'Call Me.' Niall wanted to work with her on the song's 'crashy' parts to bring out the jazziness. Chance liked Gina's interpretation of the song and thought Kate's performance kept growing. Kelly compared Gina to Florence Welch and thought Kate was 'very rock-n-roll.' Blake praised Kate's unique and 'weird' performance, while Niall appreciated Kate's quirky character and Gina's consistent performance, ultimately choosing Gina as the winner.
In Team Chance's first pairing, Ray Uriel and NariYella competed against each other to see who has a stronger identity as a performer. NariYella sang 'Bust Your Windows' and Reba coached her to embody the song's heartbroken character. Ray chose 'Lately' and was coached by Reba to convey the song's emotions through his voice. Kelly was impressed with NariYella's acting but thought Ray did well with a tough song choice. Blake thought Ray had the better performance, but NariYella was stronger overall. Niall favored NariYella, but Chance chose Ray as the winner of the knockout.
Blake paired up Walker Wilson and Kylee Dayne for the next round. Kylee wowed Reba with her powerful voice while performing 'All by Myself,' but Reba suggested that she remain still during the performance. Walker sang 'I Ain’t Living Long Like This,' showcasing his wild upbringing. Blake thought Walker could improve by varying his notes instead of repeating the same one. The judges thought they both gave very different performances, with Kylee delivering a bold vocal and Walker staying within his comfort zone. Kelly praised Walker for finding his lane and Kylee for her ability to do powerful vocals. Blake ultimately chose Kylee, saying she put it all out there with the song choice and performance.
Cait Martin and Kala Banham competed in the final knockout for Team Kelly. Cait sang 'All the Man That I Need' in honor of her partner, but she was a little sharp in rehearsal. Kelly helped her center her voice among the band. Kala sang “Iris” with an interpretation based on her relationship with music. Reba and Kelly were moved by Kala's rehearsal, but Kelly advised her to put more ache into her delivery. Blake felt that Cait was nervous while Kala had a lot of dynamics and passion. Niall praised both performances. Chance complimented Kala, but thought Cait won the round. Kelly was torn between the two but decided to keep Cait on her team. Both Chance and Blake stole Kala, but Kala chose to join Chance's team.
What to expect from 'The Voice' Season 23 Episode 13?
The first performers were EJ Michels and Michael B from Team Niall. EJ sang a song called 'Trip Switch' and Michael B sang 'When You’re Gone'. After their performances, Niall commented on EJ's different approach to the song and Reba applauded. EJ asked Reba for advice on how to tell a story through a song, and she shared her technique of visualizing it like a story in her mind. Michael explained his emotional attachment to the song, and Niall noted his range of singing. Reba told Michael that it's okay to be emotional and not hit every note perfectly. Niall's only critique was that Michael used too much of the love octave.
EJ wore a sparkly jacket and sang with attitude, which was different from his previous ballad performances. He missed a note in the beginning but made up for it with high notes and falsetto at the end. Michael sang with a Broadway voice and gave a captivating performance. The song was a mix of musical theater and pop ballads. After the performances, Chance gave Michael a standing ovation and chose him over EJ because EJ's performance lacked pitch. Kelly complimented Michael's powerhouse voice and said she'll cover EJ's song on her talk show soon. Blake said EJ's performance was huge, but Michael was in the pocket, and he'd chosen Michael. Niall finally picked Michael as the winner.
The second pair to perform was from Team Chance, featuring Magnus and Jamar Langley who respectively sang "Ordinary People" and "Cruisin'." Magnus started with the song that Chance revealed was the first he learned to play on the piano. Reba commented on how rich and thick Magnus's voice was at the start and how he hit the high note perfectly, leaving her amazed. She compared his voice to a river of chocolate and noted his comfort on stage. Jamar played an electric guitar and had a great voice, according to Reba, who also gave Chance some feedback on the band. Jamar performed first, wearing a white outfit and playing a crimson electric guitar with a beautiful, sweet tone in his voice. Magnus sounded a bit shaky compared to his performance in front of Reba, and the river of chocolate wasn't as smooth this time. However, he ended with some scatting that brought back his momentum. Kelly favored Jamar, saying he could sing some "baby-making" music, while Magnus had a beautiful voice but may sound like an imitation of John Legend. Blake complimented Jamar's guitar playing but leaned towards Magnus. Niall thought Magnus was powerful but preferred someone who could tell a story, so he chose Jamar. Chance noted that Magnus had a unique vocal identity while Jamar had the same thing in a different music style. Rather than making the final decision, Chance asked for a commercial break, and after the break, he chose Jamar.
Grace West and Neil Salsich from Team Blake were next to perform. They sang 'Here You Come Again' and 'Takin It To The Streets' respectively. Blake provided some feedback on Grace’s notes, while Reba advised her to play with the camera and smile. Although Neil admitted he couldn't look at Reba while singing, she reassured him that he sounded great. Grace's singing style resembled that of Dolly Parton, with an undeniable twang in her deeper tone. In contrast, Neil grooved to the music from the start and had a different vibe than Grace, who was the epitome of Team Blake.
Niall praised Neil's arrangement and called Grace unbelievable, but he ultimately leaned towards Grace. Chance complimented Grace's tone and Neil's stage presence. Kelly described Neil as a versatile singer and Grace as a star. Blake called them the best of the best and chose Grace. However, just as Neil was leaving the stage, Kelly hit her button to steal him!
Jerome Godwin III and Ross Clayton from team Niall took to the stage next, with "Someone You Love" and "Dirty Work" respectively. Even with just a snippet of Jerome's song, I felt a strong Jordan Fisher vibe. Reba commented on Jerome's open-mouthed singing style, quipping that if you asked how to sing, that's how. However, she did express a desire to feel the more emotional depth from Jerome's performance. Ross was clearly thrilled to have Reba in attendance and delivered his twang flawlessly. Reba praised Ross's ability to get the crowd to sing along. During the Knockout, Ross's voice was positively heartwarming, striking a perfect balance between emotion and enjoyment. Meanwhile, Jerome appeared to struggle with breathing and nerves, resulting in a somewhat lackluster performance compared to his previous ones, though he did redeem himself with a strong high note near the end. The coaches were unanimous in their praise for Ross's performance, with Kelly stating that he continues to blow her away, and Blake commenting that he sang the song as though he was halfway through a concert already. Ultimately, Niall chose Ross as the winner of the Knockout, acknowledging Jerome's effort despite some pitch issues in the first verse.
In the penultimate duet of the episode, Tiana Goss and Sorelle from Team Chance took the stage to perform 'God Is A Woman' and 'Blame It On The Boogie,' respectively. Chance was quick to praise Tiana's unique vocal abilities, while Reba acknowledged her incredible talent, but noted the challenge of competing against a trio. As for Sorelle, I hate to say it, but their performance always comes across as a middle school talent show act to me. While their three-part harmony received compliments from Reba, I can't imagine them standing out among so many notable singers. Unfortunately, their actual performance didn't impress me either. It was a predictable performance from a trio of young sisters, complete with some basic dance moves. On the other hand, Tiana did an excellent job showcasing the different aspects of the song. While she didn't do anything particularly outstanding, I believe she outperformed Sorelle by a mile. Kelly praised Tiana's tender singing style, while also acknowledging the craziness (in a good way) of Sorelle's performance. Blake was complimentary of both performers and noted Sorelle's perfect sound. Niall also gave kudos to both performers. Ultimately, Chance chose Sorelle, noting that they bring something unique to the show that Tiana doesn't.
The 2023 Knockouts culminated with a remarkable duo: Holly Brand and Rachel Christine, from Team Kelly, rendering 'Blue Moon Of Kentucky' and 'Rhiannon' respectively. Reba was left spellbound by the spectacular ending of Holly's performance and praised her for venturing into uncharted territories, adding that Holly's rendition of the song was unlike anything she had heard before. Meanwhile, Kelly referred to Rachel as the dark horse of her team, and Reba complimented Rachel on her mic-holding technique. Holly's voice, despite her typical twang, had a unique quality that could handle various types of country music with ease. She incorporated a lot of falsetto in her performance, which impressed Niall consistently. Rachel had a deeper tone than before, and while her performance was decent, it bordered on becoming monotonous, especially when compared to Holly's. Blake admired Holly's excellent yodel and praised Rachel for a job well done. Chance said Rachel caught his attention, while Holly blew him away. Niall raved about Rachel's smashing performance and confessed to being a fan of Holly since day one. Kelly saw a bit of herself in Rachel and thanked Holly for trusting herself. Finally, Kelly chose Holly, but just as Carson announced Rachel's availability for stealing, Blake stole her for his team.
