For fans of the show 'Deadliest Catch', one thing is for certain — the captains featured every season always run a tight ship. After all, in their line of work, there is little to no room for error, seeing that the tiniest mistake can prove to be fatal.

Captain Keith Colburn definitely subscribes to this, and while he does believe in his fair share of superstitions and relies on his intuition, it's safe to say that it hasn't failed him so far.

He is a first-generation fisherman

Being a first-generation comes with it's own set of trials and tribulations. Having the right guide and exposure to the trade is always a bonus. However, that doesn't necessarily put others at a disadvantage. If there is anyone who has proven that they can rise to the challenge, it would be Captain Keith Colburn. Captain Colburn's story is a famous one. He left his life behind in Lake Tahoe in 1985 to try his hand at making a fortune at sea. With his best friend in tow, they both landed in Kodiak, Alaska, with no experience, a tent and $50.

And thus he began his journey, as a greenhorn on the crabber 'Alaska Trader'. Three years later, in 1988, he was a full-share deckhand on the Wizard, a vessel he'd later go on to become the captain of. Having earned his US Coast Guard license in 1990 and his master's/captain's license in 1992, Colburn continued working on the Wizard. Although he purchased the crabber Sirene, he continued to work on the Wizard. Having sold Sirene within two years of purchasing it, Colburn went ahead and purchased the Wizard.

In an exclusive interview, Colburn spoke about his long-standing relationship with his vessel, the Wizard. "My relationship with the Wizard is a love affair. I fell in love with the Wizard 30 years ago. And I’ve been on board nearly my entire career. I’ve learned the craft from being in the trenches to ownership of the boat. The Wizard is part of my life," he said. "I have a deep respect and commitment to keep the vessel in the best shape possible. The Wizard is an anomaly – it’s a bigger boat, a stronger boat. And if I take care of her, she’ll take care of me and my crew. She always gets us home safe. And we keep her happy by filling her belly with crab."

He's quite the chef

Before Captain Colburn hopped on a flight to Alaska, he was an avid chef. He began cooking at the age of 14, having worked at French restaurants. He worked his way to the top, passing through kitchens as a saucier and a sous-chef. He even went on to receive training and was an executive chef by the time he decided to switch careers. Combining his culinary skills with his fishing prowess, it comes as no surprise that crab is one of his trademark specials.

As per his website, he "enjoys creating elaborate culinary delights such as citrus-chili infused crab with spicy lemon aioli, ruby red grapefruit and mango ponzu sauces or, he’ll simplify the presentation by serving the crab as an appetizer of passion fruit and crab ceviche".

What is his net worth?

As a fisherman and captain of the Wizard, as well as being a TV personality, Captain Colburn is easily one of the most notable figures from the series. He currently has a net worth of $1.5M, as reported by Celebrity Net Worth.
