'Verity' director drops new details about Anne Hathaway's 'dark and twisted' thriller: 'It’s not…'
'Verity' director Michael Showalter just revealed an exciting update about the upcoming book adaptation. For the unversed, 'Verity', scheduled to hit the screens in 2026, is based on the 2018 Colleen Hoover novel of the same name. The film revolves around Lowen Ashleigh, a woman who is hired as a ghostwriter for another woman, named Verity Crawford, with the former discovering some jaw-dropping truths along the way. Anne Hathaway, well-known for her works in films like 'The Princess Diaries', 'The Devil Wears Prada', and 'The Idea of You', plays the titular role in the forthcoming film. Along with Hathaway, the movie also stars the 'Fifty Shades of Grey' alum Dakota Johnson as Lowen.
The cast of 'Verity' also features Josh Hartnett, who will play the role of Verity's husband, Jeremy Crawford, alongside Brady Wagner, Daniel Echevarria, Michael Abbott Jr., and Asel Swango. During a recent interview with ScreenRant's Tatiana Hullender, Showalter candidly spoke about her working experience with Hathaway on 'Verity'. Showalter gushed over Hathaway and mentioned that the duo had "a really great connection creatively and collaboratively."
The 'Verity' director added, "We really had a wonderful experience working together on 'The Idea of You'. We wanted to find another project to do together, and this came up. We went and shot that movie about a year ago now, or a little bit less than that. I loved working on that, and I'm excited for people to see Verity. It's not coming out for a little while, not until next fall, but it's a totally different kind of movie than 'Oh. What. Fun.' or 'The Idea of You'."
Elsewhere in the interview, Showalter shed light on his overall experience with 'Verity'. He admitted that he had a different experience in comparison to his other movies, and described 'Verity as a 'quite dark and twisted' thriller. "I'm very excited and proud of that movie," the 'Verity' director said. In terms of the 'Verity' storyline, the film's logline reads, "Upon arrival at the lavish Crawford estate, Lowen slowly learns that things are not exactly as they seem with the discovery of a secret, unfinished manuscript that may divulge chilling admissions about the family's past."
"As Lowen ingratiates herself with Jeremy and his young son Crew, she must discern if Verity’s writings are merely lurid works of fiction or an ominous warning by a deranged psychopath,” the logline adds, as per Variety. The script of the film has been penned by Nick Antosca, who also serves as a producer alongside Alex Hedlund, Jordana Mollick, Stacey Sher, Showalter, Hathaway, and Hoover. In case you're wondering, 'Verity' will be released on October 2, 2026.
