'Pluribus' Episode 4 reveals a major clue that changes everything about the Others
Apple TV's 'Pluribus' follows Carol Sturka (Rhea Seehorn), one of the few people unaffected by an alien virus creates a peaceful, but potentially dangerous, global hive mind. With every episode, the sci-fi thriller continues to untangle its tightly woven storyline for its audience. Over the last few episodes, Carol has been looking for answers about the virus that took the life of her partner, Helen (Miriam Shor), and transformed humanity into a permanently happy hive mind; and the fourth 'Pluribus' episode might've just provided another important hint about the nature of the Others.
In 'Pluribus' Episode 4, titled 'Please, Carol', Seehorn's Carol asked the Others some tough questions about the hive mind. She quizzed Larrt, one of the Others, about her own fantasy romance novels, eager to know if her partner Helen enjoyed the 'Winds of Wycaro' series. Larry relayed that Helen found the books 'harmless', likening them to cotton candy, and described 'Bitter Chrysalis' as simply 'fine'. The exchange weighed heavily on Carol, stirring memories of her late lover, Helen, who always insisted that her writing mattered more than she realized. The conversation led Carol to realize an important truth about the Others: they cannot lie.
Armed with this new information, Carol decided to press Zosia (Karolina Wydra) for more information about the Joining and asked her if it could be reversed. However, Zosia evades answering the question, saying the Others "can’t answer questions like that," as per Mashable. The answer indicated that there was a way to reverse the Joining, and Carol appeared to have inferred the same. "Your non-answer is my answer,” she told Zosia. More determined now, she decides to use a vial of sodium thiopental, a.k.a the truth serum.
But before using it on Zosia, she tried it on herself, only to reveal another unsettling truth. After breaking down in tears over Helen. Carol realizes that she is sexually attracted to Zosia, one of the Others. However, when it comes to finding out how to reverse the Joining from Zosia, the truth serum does not help. The Other manages to prevent herself from telling the truth, and instead goes into cardiac arrest.
Additionally, according to Looper, the fourth episode of Vince Gilligan's show featured two important cameos. Upon returning home from the hospital after visiting Zosia, Sturka discovers a group of hive-minded individuals busy at work in her house, completing the cleanup of hand grenades. Among them, she recognizes one as 'the mayor', who even expresses gratitude for her vote. Tim Keller, who has served as the mayor of Albuquerque since 2017, portrayed Mayor Tim in the series. Additionally, Rosa Estrada, known for her role as a health medic on 'Better Call Saul', also appeared as a paramedic in this episode.
