Luciane Buchanan reveals why her character Rose was missing from 'Night Agent' Season 3: 'They called me…'
While 'The Night Agent' Season 3 does raise the stakes and sets forth a high bar of narrative proficiency, there's one glaring inconsistency that would jar the viewers as they jump into the show directly from the previously released sophomore season. The character of Rose Larkin, played by actress Luciane Buchanan, was absent from the entire Season 3 of the Netflix show. Although fleeting references to Rose were made throughout the 10 episodes of the Gabriel Basso-led show, including ruminations from Peter Sutherland himself, Rose's absence was particularly felt.
Rose and Peter had been the most pleasant couple on 'The Night Agent' ever since the show's debut season, coming together as dictated by professional exigencies but forming a close bond all the same. Season 3, however, makes it clear early on that Peter and Rose are now separated, and that the former is still dealing with the aftermath of their breakup. In a scene with Deputy Director Aiden Mosley, Peter reveals that he's not in touch with Rose and that he feels it's the right way to be. Elsewhere, Peter revealed to Isabel De Leon that the breakup with Rose was his fault.
The real reason Rose wasn't included in the third season is a creative decision made by the showrunner, Shawn Ryan, and executive producer Marney Hochman. The creative team realized there wasn't a natural way to seamlessly integrate Rose's character into Season 3 of 'The Night Agent', and instead of having her play a subservient role to Peter, Ryan, and Hochman, they decided to exclude her from the narrative altogether. This was confirmed by Buchanan herself, who opened up about her exit from the show in a previous Deadline exclusive interview back in September 2025, when she said, "I won’t be returning to Season 3 of The Night Agent. As much as that show has been so amazing, especially for my career — being a lead on a U.S. show from little New Zealand was such a whirlwind — the writers decided that they wanted to follow Peter and his journey based on what happened at the end of Season 2."
Buchanan further added, "They called me not so long after Season 2, and they were like, we’ve been trying to find a way to bring her in, but we want to do her character justice and not make her a sub-character. I totally respected that decision and agreed. I was like, if it makes sense to a story, I’ll do that. If it doesn’t, let’s not force that." Similarly, Ryan himself attested to Luciane's departure when he remarked, "Luciane has been a beloved member of our Night Agent family for our first two seasons, and her portrayal of Rose Larkin and Rose’s relationship with Peter has been a huge part of the show’s success. We always envisioned the show as telling a new story each season with a revolving cast, and the story we broke for Season 3, much to our chagrin, didn’t have a satisfying place for Rose." 'The Night Agent' is exclusively available on Netflix.
