Will there be a Season 4 of ‘The Night Agent’? Creators Shawn Ryan gives an update: 'Season 4 is...'
One minute you’re pressing play, the next you’ve burned through 10 episodes, and you’re staring at the ceiling, wondering what Peter Sutherland is doing right now. That’s the effect of ‘The Night Agent’, Netflix’s fast-moving political thriller. The series, led by Gabriel Basso, follows FBI agent Peter Sutherland. The guy doesn’t exactly get a corner office or a flashy title. Instead, he works in the shadows as a so-called Night Agent, fielding calls that rarely mean anything good. Season 3 arrived on Thursday, February 19, and Netflix did what it does best: dropped all 10 episodes at once. And soon, fans started buzzing about one big question: Is there going to be a fourth round?
At the moment, there’s no formal renewal announcement from Netflix. Nothing stamped. But behind the curtain, the gears are already turning. Series creator Shawn Ryan recently hinted that the writing team isn’t exactly sitting around waiting for a phone call. In fact, the writers’ room has been operating. Scripts are being drafted. Storylines are being mapped out. The groundwork is there. “Season 4 is not officially picked up yet, but a while ago, in calendar year 2025, they did quietly pick up a writers room,” Ryan revealed in an interview with Deadline.
He added, “We’ve been working for a while on the storyline. We have some scripts, we are breaking stories. I think you know from the tax credit, there’s a date by which you need to be filming by; there’s time for us at the moment.” Ryan, who previously created ‘The Shield’, as well as ‘The Unit’ and ‘Timeless’, knows a thing or two about high-stakes television. He’s been around long enough to understand how networks and streamers weigh risk versus reward. And right now, the ball is in Netflix’s court. According to Ryan, the platform wants to see how Season 3 performs before cutting the check for another installment.
He stated, “To Netflix’s credit, they want to make sure that the creative side of things is always buttoned up before committing that amount of money. We’re in the story-breaking, script-writing phase, and my guess is, sometime in the next [few weeks, up to a month], they’ll make a decision about officially greenlighting Season 4, and if and when they do, we’ll be ready to go with the scripts so that there’s not that much time between Season 3 and Season 4. I think Netflix cares about their viewers and is looking for ways to minimize the time between the seasons of their most successful shows.”
That last part matters. In the streaming era, fans have grown used to waiting two, sometimes three years, between seasons of their favorite series. But ‘The Night Agent’ has managed to keep a pretty tight schedule so far. Season 2 premiered on January 23, 2025. Season 3 followed roughly 13 months later, landing on February 19. If the pattern holds, and if Netflix gives the official thumbs-up, a fourth season could reasonably land in winter 2027.
