If there's anyone in 'Pluribus' who was destined to shoulder the responsibility of saving what’s left of humanity, it's Carol (Rhea Seehorn). Episode 5 pushes her further into a moral and emotional minefield where "niceness" reveals itself as a tool of control rather than virtue. After accidentally triggering the entire planet's emotions in the previous episode, Carol is grappling with guilt, especially over Zosia's sudden cardiac arrest. Though Zosia is expected to recover, the incident has shaken the hive-minded "Smiley Faces," who are now visibly droopy, skittish, and deeply wary of Carol. Laxmi, whose son burst into tears during Carol's interrogation, takes the incident as a personal betrayal.

But what's strange is the fear. Instead of confronting Carol, the hive's members flee Albuquerque entirely, piling into anything with wheels, just to maintain distance from her, as per Decider. Their only communication arrives through automated voice messages: polite, overly soothing statements about needing space. They want her to believe they don't hate her. Meanwhile, they avoid her like she's a contagion. Still, Carol presses forward. Twelve immune individuals remain out there, and she's convinced they deserve to know an antidote exists, even if she won't hand over the recipe.

The hive, terrified of upsetting her further, agrees to deliver her video message but refuses to send anyone in person, resorting instead to a drone pickup. That drone becomes another casualty of Carol's indignation when she deliberately overloads the drop-off bag and watches the machine crash into a streetlight. With the city now deserted and its lights dimmed, Albuquerque becomes overrun by wildlife. Wolves stalk Carol's yard at night, prompting her to restore the city's power grid, simply to keep the animals at bay. Carol soon stumbles onto a disturbing trail. While disposing of trash, she notices that nearly every bin in her neighborhood is overflowing with empty milk cartons.

Her curiosity leads her to the Duke City dairy plant, according to DMT. Inside, she finds the machinery coated with residue from a translucent, oily substance (definitely not milk). With the help of a chorus of unsettling, chittering crows guiding her deeper into the facility, Carol discovers stacks of brown bags filled with a pale blue powder. Fans may immediately think 'Breaking Bad', but Carol's pH test reveals the resulting solution is neutral, complicating any theories about it being meth. Whatever this powder is, its mass production suggests it plays a critical role in sustaining the hive mind.

Carol records a second video for the 12 immune survivors, hoping at least one of them, likely Manousos, will recognize the substance or understand why it's being distributed on such a massive scale. Carol's investigation is fueled in part by grief. Helen's absence presses heavily on her, and when wolves try to dig into her wife's burial site, Carol pours her energy into reinforcing the grave with stone slabs and painting a heartfelt headstone. Also, she notices a barcode on the powder bag from the dairy plant and traces it to her local Sprouts. Inside, she finds similar barcodes on large bags of dog food, yet another link in the supply chain.

The packaging leads her to Agri Jet, a facility that looks like it's storing far more than grain or animal feed. In the episode's final moments, Carol enters a dim, cluttered storage room. Wrapped stacks of strange, heavy objects line the space. When she peels back the plastic and sees what's underneath, she recoils in horror. Whatever the hive is doing, it's far more disturbing, far more organized, and far more intentional than Carol (or the audience) imagined. Episode 5 leaves Carol on the cusp of a massive revelation, with the hive's gentle facade beginning to crack. And for the first time, the truth looks close enough to touch, and terrifying enough to run from.
