'Watchmen' Episode 5: Senator Keene Jr's involvement in the Seventh Kavalry hints at a higher power controlling 7K

'Watchmen' Episode 5 reintroduces Senator Joe Keene as a member of the white supremacist group — Seventh Kavalry which consists of followers of Rorschach
PUBLISHED NOV 18, 2019

'Watchmen' Episode 5 confirmed fan theories that Senator Joe Keene was part of the white supremacist group — the Seventh Kavalry (7K).

The episode saw Looking Glass aka Wade Tillman (Tim Blake Nelson) get lured into 7K's base of operation by a woman who attended a support group that he hosts for survivors of the giant squid attack.

He enters this abandoned factory and the first thing that he comes across is a group of people in their Rorschach masks experimenting with an interdimensional portal with a basketball.

Looking Glass, who believes that he has back up arriving any moment doesn't even use his mask and his entire focus is on the portal.

For a man who is suffering from trauma after the giant squid, which until this moment he believed was a result of experimenting with a similar portal — this moment is torturous for him.

All he can think about is stopping the portal, but before that, he is taken to meet an elite member of the 7K. Turns out Joe Keene, the Republican Senator of Oklahoma, has a big hand in the functioning of 7K.

Just as fans had expected, the scene of Keene being taken hostage by a Rorschach member at Chief Judd Crawford's funeral was a hoax that Keene set up for political mileage.

Looking Glass, is, of course, shocked especially when he realizes the ramifications of this revelation on White Night. The night when Seventh Kavalry organized a synchronized attack on NYPD cops home, resulted in the deaths of many, including Angela Abar aka Sister Night's partner and his wife's death.

Angela herself was attacked, however, she was one of the two survivors. The other one being Crawford. Senator Keene's connection to the 7K was a long time coming. Especially after Peteypedia released the letter that Keene Sr had written to Crawford's father.

When Looking Glass confronts Keene Jr about White Night, all the Senator had to say was that he is no murderer. He explained that he was just a politician trying to make a mark in the world.

He also tells Looking Glass to set Angela up to take the fall for Crawford's death — some charge that would keep her busy for the next couple of days so that his plans can proceed without interference.

In return, he gives Looking Glass access to a video recorded by Adrian Veidt himself in 1985, in which Veidt confesses that the giant squid attack was a hoax that he had set up to bring people together through fear.

Now, here are a few things that the Senator's hand in 7K hints at. First, the chances of Crawford having taken an active part in 7K are now high. Secondly, there is something higher than 7K at play here. We saw hints of it in the letter titled 'Four Letters' by David Petey.

There is a reference to an order, that consists of members who believe that they are Achaians coming from Troy, beaten off their true course. We are unsure if this is literal or is just a metaphor.

This does, however, give space to speculations that this order that Keene Sr is referring to is an influential body that has been in existence since before 1955. Who are they? The only clue we have got so far is the symbol of an eye.

This symbol is used in the letter, is graffitied on the walls of the abandoned building that 7K is operating out of and we saw it in a book in the promo of the show's upcoming episode as well.

Finally, the plan that the Senator mentions to Looking Glass coincides with the timeline of Will Reeves and Lady Trieu's countdown as well. Are the three working together?

After all, Lady Trieu was worried about Will Reeves' family coming in the way of her grand plan. Now that Sister Night is under lockdown, it definitely solves her problem. The next episode of 'Watchmen' will air on Sunday at 9 pm ET on HBO.
