'Watchmen' Episode 5: Adrian Veidt's confession video is very similar to comic book scene where he reveals his masterplan

On its own, the confession tape wouldn't have been that big of a reveal, at least not to people who have read the comics. It is but a solid scene and the way it reminds one of the comics makes it a treat for fans both old and new.

Ozymandias/Adrian Veidt is one of the best characters ever created, be it on print or screen and Jeremy Irons' version of the character from HBO's 'Watchmen' is no exception. Irons' portrayal of Veidt channels the arrogance and charm of his comic book counterpart while still being unique in its own way.

Veidt's best moment in the comics was the scene where he revealed his masterplan to his former teammates Rorschach and Nite-Owl. The scene beautifully reversed the trope of the supervillain explaining his plans to the heroes just in time for the good guys to stop him and it's still remembered as one of the best scenes from Alan Moore's original graphic novel.

In 'Watchmen' Episode 5 'Little Fear of Lightning', we see Veidt making yet another "confession", this time in a time-capsule video created for the newly elected President of the United States. He tells the new President that he engineered his election, which was just another piece of his masterplan that started with the events of the comics.

Once again, we see that same showmanship in the character. Veidt exudes confidence as he calmly tells the leader of the free world that his election was built on the blood of innocents, blood that he spilled for the sake of a better world. So how do the two scenes compare? It's really no contest.

The scene in the comics was certainly more hard-hitting since this time around we do know what Veidt is about to reveal. On its own, the confession tape wouldn't have been that big of a reveal, at least not to people who have read the comics, but it's still a solid scene and the way it reminds one of the comics makes it a treat for fans both old and new.

'Watchmen' Season 1 Episode 6 'This Extraordinary Being' will air on HBO on November 24.
