On Sunday, September 5, British singer, model and actress Sarah Harding, who had 21 UK Top 10 singles as a member of Girls Aloud, died aged 39. It was revealed last year that she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Harding’s mother announced her death on Instagram and wrote, “It’s with deep heartbreak that today I’m sharing the news that my beautiful daughter Sarah has sadly passed away. Many of you will know of Sarah’s battle with cancer and that she fought so strongly from her diagnosis until her last day. She slipped away peacefully this morning. I’d like to thank everyone for their kind support over the past year. It meant the world to Sarah and it gave her great strength and comfort to know she was loved. I know she won’t want to be remembered for her fight against this terrible disease — she was a bright shining star and I hope that’s how she can be remembered instead.”

In August 2020, Harding announced her diagnosis, adding that cancer had spread to other parts of her body. The diagnosis, she said had come earlier that year. "I'm currently undergoing weekly chemotherapy sessions and I am fighting as hard as I possibly can," she said at the time.

Was Sarah Harding married?

Earlier this year in March, Harding revealed that she cried about never having children. She also branded her split from ex-fiance Tom Crane as “one of the biggest mistakes of my life.” She added that she “never stopped blaming herself” for the end of the relationship. In her book ‘Hear Me Out’, she wrote that chemotherapy “will have killed any chance” she might have had of becoming a mother.

She wrote: “I was saying how we never thought Nadine [Coyle] would be the first one of us to have a child, and that now three of them have kids. It might seem odd to worry about not having children when I don't even know how much of a life I have left, but it's there. The truth is, even if my prognosis was better, it still wouldn't be on the cards because of all the chemotherapy I've had. That treatment, harsh as it is, will have killed any chance I might have had. It's making me cry just thinking about it.”

She also wrote that she ended up pushing her ex-fiance Tom away during their long-distance relationship. “I've never stopped blaming myself. Losing him was one of the biggest mistakes of my life, but we just couldn't seem to find a way through the impasse.” Harding and Crane dated for five years. Then the two got engaged during a trip to the Maldives in 2010, However, they reportedly ended things six months before their planned wedding. Crane confirming the split said, "Sarah and I have decided to take a break. I have nothing else to say".

In October 2011, Harding checked into rehab in South Africa to deal with her alcohol dependence and depression. Later, speaking about her past relationship with Paul Danan, she said the break-up left her feeling "very lonely".

She said: “A lot of my issues were down to being in a toxic relationship. For me, it stems completely from being hurt, 6 months before I was due to get married. It all just tumbled around me and I had to front everything and he f**ked off to Ibiza and I had nothing. And I felt like I had lost my family and my friends that we had all built for five years. I felt like I had no one left that I could turn to. I was very lonely, I had a few good select friends that helped save me from myself, which I am so grateful for. I’m very much a private person, so for me, it’s quite overwhelming to do this.”
