MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: Vincent Tang, who was indicted on counts of aggravated animal cruelty has been handed a five-year probation. Tang was indicted in 2019 after cell phone footage caught him assaulting actress Janis Dardaris' dogs, one of whom was killed. The Manhattan Supreme Court also ruled that Tang had to attend mental health counseling after his lawyer argued that it "has been a mental-health issue since day one."

Tang's girlfriend was sitting the dogs, while Dardaris went to South Carolina for a stage production of 'Murder on the Orient Express'. On October 24, 2019, Tang broke into the house and assaulted both dogs, with a resident of an adjacent building recording footage of the assault. One of the Maltese pooches, Alex was killed while the other Frankie has been left with skull and rib fractures and a permanently damaged left eye.

Dardaris adopted the two dogs when they were three months old.

Who is Vincent Tang?

The 36-year-old Brooklyn resident was the boyfriend of Tang's dog sitter in 2019 when the incident occurred. He was arrested in November and indicted by a grand jury in Manhattan Supreme Court on two counts of aggravated animal cruelty. His lawyer Jason Goldman told The New York Post"We’re appreciative that the court, unlike the government, agreed that ongoing treatment is a better solution for him than sitting in a jail cell."

Along with counseling, the court has also ruled a 10-year ban on animal ownership and registration with the city’s animal abuse registry.

It is believed that Tang took Dardaris' house keys from his girlfriend when she was out. He then broke into the house and assaulted the dogs. Cell phone footage showed Tang kicking one of the dogs on the roof, before bringing it back inside. Tang initially plead not guilty.

Not much else is known about Tang. There's no record of him on social media.

Dardaris "beyond disappointed"

Responding to the ruling, Dardaris told The Post "I am beyond disappointed at the decision to sentence Mr. Tang to only probation. I don’t understand how someone who committed such cruel and violent acts against two small dogs would not have to face more serious consequences." Her love for the two dogs was well documented, with multiple images of them posted on social media.

She has filed a civil case against Tang for 'intentional infliction of emotional distress and trespass' for an undisclosed sum. The case is still pending.

Dardaris isn't the only one disappointed by the verdict, some have taken to social media to vent their frustration. One user tweeted "Another miscarriage of justice in Manhattan Supreme Court. Vincent Tang gets a slap on the wrist after beating one dog to death and savagely beating his brother, another defenseless dog nearly to death."

Another said, "Let me introduce you to @jasongoldman_ who defended Vincent Tang, the tiny dog torturer and murderer. Tang got no jail time. Disgusting".
