DeKALB COUNTY, GEORGIA: DeKalb County lost one of its well-respected and veteran police sergeant after he was hit by a vehicle while responding to a crash involving another DeKalb officer near the Williams Street exit on the Downtown Connector. The tragic incident happened when Sgt. Daniel Mobley, a 22-year veteran of the department, was struck by a car at nine in the morning of Saturday, January 2, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. As per DeKalb police, Mobley was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, but could not be saved.

Police Chief Mirtha Ramos said, “Today is a sad day as the DeKalb County Police Department lost one of its guardian angels. We will miss him dearly and our hearts go out to his family.” The chief also mentioned that the 44-year-old reached the location for “supervisory investigation” and as he came out of his patrol vehicle, a car hit him. “The entire Department of Public Safety sends their heartfelt prayers and sympathy to the family and colleagues of Sergeant Mobley,” the state agency said.

Ramos added, “The law enforcement community as a whole is hurting. When you have officers flying into the hospital — not even in uniform because it’s their day off — to show their respects, that means he earned that respect.” She urged drivers to slow down when approaching vehicles stopped parallel to the road. “Not just (for) law enforcement, but even when you see someone changing a tire. We lose people daily on our highways and we just need to pay closer attention,” she said.

Governor Brian Kemp also extended his condolences as he tweeted, “Heartbreaking news. Please join our family in praying for the friends and loved ones of Sergeant Mobley. May the Lord be a comfort to them and his fellow officers in this difficult time.” Mobley was an impeccable law enforcement officer, the police department where he worked said that also added that he was employed in June 1998. A police spokeswoman said that because of his great work, Mobley was often utilized as the officer-in-charge. A few years ago only, he was given the position of sergeant and assigned to the agency’s North-Central Precinct, where he frequently got letters of commendation.

DeKalb CEO Michael Thurmond released a statement after Mobley’s tragic death that noted, “On behalf of the residents and employees of DeKalb County and the Board of Commissioners, I express our deepest sympathy and offer our prayers to the family and friends of police Sgt. Daniel Mobley who gave his life in the line of duty this morning.”

Another tragic incident happened recently with a Wisconsin family when two siblings died in a car crash because of a wrong-way driver. Danycka and Domynick Milis lost their lives after a 47-year-old suspect's vehicle hit their car. Reports said the 18-year-old Danycka and 21-year-old Domynick were returning to their home after seeing a Christmas lights display at Daytona International Speedway in Florida when the accident happened. "I can't make sense of this or wrap my head around the last 20 hours. Domynick and Danycka were the best of friends and I am thankful they had each other on their journey to heaven,” the siblings’ mother said.
