'V Wars' Season 1 Episode 3 sees Ian Somerhalder's wife Nikki Reed play ex-wife to his Dr. Luther Swann
Ever since the trailer for 'V Wars' from Netflix dropped, observant fans were quick to notice the presence of Nikki Reed in a short clip. There was also the announcement that Nikki Reed would be playing an unnamed character in her first starring role with her real-life husband, Ian Somerhalder.
Ian Somerhalder -- who also serves as executive producer and director for the series based on the comics of the same name by Jonathan Maberry -- plays Dr. Luther Swann, who is trying to figure out the science behind why some people turn into vampires while others do not. He also seems to be more sympathetic towards them than the government, willing to find a cure for it rather than kill the infected outright.
In her quest to find out more about Luther, journalist Kaylee Vo (Jacky Lai) tracks down Luther's ex-wife, Rachel, who is played by Nikki Reed. Rachel also has a criminal record, which explains why she does not have custody of her son, Dez. Kaylee reaches out to Rachel and interviews her. Rachel is ready for the camera, telling Kaylee that Luther is emotionally abusive, manipulative and that he had threatened her relationship with her son.
Luther is visibly upset after seeing this interview and calls her -- which Rachel tells him is what she did the interview for -- because Dez wants him to reach out to her. She tells him she just wants to see her son one more time.
At the restaurant where they meet, at first they talk civilly, but when Rachel realizes that Luther did not bring their son along, she gets angry and violent continuing to say, "you killed her" while assaulting him. She is stopped when Luther's "prison guard" shows up. Luther returns to his son and tells him that Dez cannot see his mother because "she is the same", if not worse.
Of course, fans would be disappointed at seeing the relationship between Luther and Rachel and would have been hoping for something a little bit more romantic. But with seven episodes left in the first season, they might hold on to hope.
