'Under Paris' post-credit scene explained: Final map heralds a hellish and lethal landscape
Contains spoilers and speculations for 'Under Paris'
PARIS, FRANCE: 'Under Paris' started streaming on Netflix on June 5, 2024, and just as the viewers were reeling from its bizarre ending, the makers threw another curveball in the form of a post-credit scene that has a map.
'Under Paris' sees the city of Paris being under a brutal shark attack as a mutated shark named Lilith takes over the Seine River along with other sharks to put a triathlon at risk. The only hope is a brilliant scientist named Sophia (Bérénice Bejo) who carries the wound of her husband being killed by a shark.
The movie has captured the imagination of viewers worldwide and the biggest talking point to come out of the film is its end and the post-credit scene. Here, we explain the meaning of the post-credit scene of 'Under Paris'.
What does the map in the post-credit scene mean?
At the end of the film, we see that the Sharks, led by Lilith, have captured a flooded Paris and made it their habitat. A constant theme in the film is how environmental damage to oceans has forced sharks to adapt and reproduce without a mate. As humans destroy the world of sharks, they have now mutated and are now out to dominate the human world.
The first frame of the film, before the movie even begins talks about the evolution theory of species and adaptability being the key to survival. It seems that the makers of the film wanted to send out the message about a dystopian world where sharks evolve enough to take over the whole world and replace humans as the dominant species.
The post-credits map shows the growing dominance of sharks over different parts of the world as they grow their population and sharks take over the world.
How did the Sharks take over Paris in 'Under Paris'?
Sophia, Adil (Nassim Lyes), and the team try to blow off Lilith's nest but the plan completely backfires and Lilith and her sharks attack the swimmers participating in the triathlon. The forces shoot at the sharks only to blow World War 2 shells inside the river off.
As the shells explode, they cause a tsunami in the river flooding Paris. Sophia and Adil wake up to a dystopian reality of sharks surrounding them and taking over the city.
The makers end the film with haunting shots of Sharks moving freely in the city and taking over the subway too.
