'Midnight Sun': Stephenie Meyer's new 'Twilight' companion novel will be told through Edward Cullen's perspective
As coronavirus continues to rage on and most news sound depressing, author Stephenie Meyer has brought something for her fans to cheer about as she announces her new ‘Twilight’ saga book. The novelist announced the release of the new book, ‘Midnight Sun’, on Monday morning, May 4, during a chat with 'Good Morning America'.
Meyer’s latest book is set to release on August 4, fifteen years after the first novel in the series was released. The new book will give a glimpse into lead character Edward Cullen’s past and his experiences as a vampire. It will also retell the iconic love story between Edward and Bella from the former’s perspective.
“I am very excited to finally, finally announce the release of 'Midnight Sun' on August 4. It's a crazy time right now and I wasn't sure if this was the right time to put this book out, but some of you have been waiting for just so, so long. It didn't seem fair to make you wait anymore. Sorry about the bad timing. Hopefully, this book can be a distraction from the real world,” Meyer said in a message to the chat show.
“I'm so excited to finally be able to share it with you,” she added.
Meyer also shared her emotions about the new book in a press release as she hoped it gives readers a chance to be happy. “I hope this book gives my readers a little pleasure to anticipate and if it arrives, a chance to live in an imaginary world for a while,” she said.
Continuing further, the mother-of-three added: “I can’t express how much I appreciate the patience of my readers, and their support over the years it took to finish ‘Midnight Sun.’”
According to reports, Meyer was working on ‘Midnight Sun' for quite some time. In 2008, she also released a partial draft of the story's first chapter 'First Sight' on her website after wondering what the first chapter of ‘Twilight’ would have been like if it was told from Edward’s point of view.
“There is so much more to his side of the story than there is to Bella’s in that first chapter. His side of Bella’s first day at Forks High School is a hundred times more exciting than her own,” she said on her website at the time.
However, later she shelved the project after some of the chapters of the book were leaked.
‘Twilight’ came out in 2005 and it immediately became an international sensation, selling over 100 million copies worldwide that lead to the three sequels, namely ‘New Moon’, ‘Eclipse’, and ‘Breaking Dawn’. The series was also adapted into movies starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson as the lead characters, which grossed a whopping $3.3 billion in ticket sales.
This comes a few months after Stewart opened up about her past relationship with Robert Pattinson. During an appearance on 'The Howard Stern Show', the 30-year-old assured fans that despite popular rumors at the time, their pairing was not a publicity stunt.
The actress accepted that she got romantically involved with Pattinson during the shoot of the vampire movies. “We were together for years, that was my first [love],” she said in February.
