Donald Trump has attracted a lot of negative comments online for claiming to send former German Chancellor Angela Merkel a white flag after she signed an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline. The former president appeared on the ‘Full Send Podcast’ Wednesday, March 9, as he said Merkel “surrendered to” Vladimir Putin’s country after she allowed the Kremlin-linked company behind the pipeline to bypass Ukraine to double the flow of Russian gas direct to Germany.

He stated: “I preached loud and clear to Angela Merkel, you are making a tremendous deal by making this deal with Russia, with Nord Stream 2. And until I came along, no one knew what Nord Stream 2 was. I was telling her loud and clear -- and publicly -- and in fact, I sent her something as a little gift. It was a white flag. It was a flag of surrender. She said ‘But what is this?’ I said, ‘That's a flag of surrender.’”

Also, on the podcast, Trump mentioned that he had not spoken with Putin after leaving office but it has been said that the Russian leader had a talk with the ex-commander-in-chief about attacking Ukraine. Earlier, Trump had praised Putin for his invasion as he called him a “genius”. During the interview, the 75-year-old bragged that if he was in the office, Putin had never invaded Ukraine.

He said, “I haven't spoken to him since, but he was never, ever going to, certainly under the Trump administration -- and I say zero chance, I don't say like, I don't think, zero chance he would have done it. And I spoke to him about it, zero chance he would have done it. He saw the weakness, he saw Afghanistan, that -- the way, the incompetence of the withdrawal, the way they did it was so bad. He viewed the United States differently, he no longer respected the United States.”

Trump was also asked about his plans for 2024 but he did not give any clear idea. Instead, he noted: “The campaign finance laws don't really allow you to discuss that unless you're going to literally go through a different process. So I think a lot of people are going to be really happy. You guys might be really happy. I think a lot of people are going to be really happy. I'll wait til -- I have so many people wanting me to do it. I think, really, that a lot of people are going to be very happy.”

Meanwhile, people on the internet called him for making comments about the Nord Stream 2 deal. A user tweeted, “He is lying. Again.” Another user said, “Can't stand his bloated, self-congratulatory rhetoric.” “Trump fails to mention that he would have given Putin Ukraine, Moldova and New York in exchange for being allowed back on Twitter,” the third one added.

A critic of Trump asked, “Why won't this man retire?” The second one wrote, “Ms Merkel was right. The US was up to no good. And Trump was too weak to stop arms flowing to the Ukraine. A strong President would have fired the NSC and the Ukraine part of State, and then dared Congress to impeach, after inviting his supporters to Wash DC.” A tweet read: “Yeah right Angela Merkle, a PhD in quantum chemistry, thought trump was an Orange chimp in a cheap suit.”
