President Donald Trump took aim at Cindy McCain after the widow of late Republican Senator John McCain endorsed Joe Biden in a thinly-veiled attack against the president. Trump has always maintained that he "wasn't a fan" of the Arizona senator, who drew backlash after dramatically casting the deciding vote against a bill designed to repeal parts of ObamaCare, Fox News reported.

"I hardly know Cindy McCain other than having put her on a Committee at her husband’s request," Trump tweeted on September 23 morning. "Joe Biden was John McCain’s lapdog. So many BAD decisions on Endless Wars & the VA, which I brought from a horror show to HIGH APPROVAL. Never a fan of John. Cindy can have Sleepy Joe!"

Cindy announced her endorsement of the former vice president on September 22, and suggested that Biden's values "outweighed the political differences between them." "My husband John lived by a code: country first," she said. "We are Republicans, yes, but Americans foremost. There's only one candidate in this race who stands up for our values as a nation, and that is @JoeBiden," she had tweeted.

McCain's widow had already showered praise on Biden during the Democratic National Convention, which saw her discuss the friendship between her late husband and the presidential hopeful. However, she did not formally endorse him at the time. "I'm deeply honored to have your support and your friendship," Biden said in response to her endorsement. "This election is bigger than any one political party. It requires all of us to come together as one America to restore the soul of the nation. Together, we'll get it done."

Biden has claimed Cindy McCain decided to support him after a controversial report by The Atlantic magazine cited anonymous sources claiming Trump had made derogatory remarks about wounded or handicapped US service members. The president strongly denied making the comments, and several individuals who were a part of his administration at the time spoke against the allegations as well — including former National Security Adviser John Bolton.

Meanwhile, Twitter user appeared to poke fun at Cindy for her last-minute endorsement of the Democratic presidential nominee. "Cindy McCain endorsing Joe Biden just helped President Trump win Arizona convincingly! Thanks Cindy!" journalist Matt Couch tweeted. "People forget Cindy McCain can be cold-blooded. She never forgave Karl Rove for the smear of her daughter and was asked if she'd ever stab Karl Rove in the back and she said 'No, I'd stab him in the front.' Cindy gave McSally the cold shoulder when she was appointed too. #AZSen," Washington Post editor Eric Garcia added.

"Swamp creature Cindy McCain will endorse Joe Biden, in case you need another reason to vote for Trump," another user wrote. "Oh Cindy, you guys lived off the public for long enough. Your meal ticket is gone and his legacy is more important than your need to be relevant. There is not a person alive who thought you would support Trump. You're upset, we get it but move on. Trump has," a fourth quipped. "See the problem, Cindy? We’re not looking for a go-along, get-along type who just wants to fit into the system. We don’t want a dignified facade with the phony smiles and glad handing. We want results and we want the lying crooks out. That’s why it’s TRUMP 2020!" another added.
