Tom Holland trolled for shading Martin Scorcese over Marvel films 'not real art' row
It has been two years since veteran filmmaker Martin Scorsese shockingly remarked that Marvel films are not "real art", and it appears MCU is still enraged about the same. While fans have defended their favorite cinematic universe by disputing Scorsese in every possible way, it appears MCU stars are also not quite happy about the comment even now. In his recent interview, Spider-Man actor Tom Holland disputed the 'Taxi Driver' director, saying, "You can ask Scorsese ‘Would you want to make a Marvel movie?’ But he doesn’t know what it’s like because he’s never made one."
The comment became viral soon after it surfaced on the internet, sparking a debate between MCU fans and Scorsese connoisseurs. Amid the hullabaloo on Twitter, it appeared that many users were trolling Tom Holland for daring to dispute a legendary filmmaker of Scorsese's stature. He, however, is not the first MCU star to conflict with Scorsese's opinion. In fact, late star Chadwick Boseman had criticized the director in the past, as he said, "The mystery that Scorsese is talking about is in Black Panther. If he saw it, he didn’t get that there was this feeling of not knowing what was going to happen that black people felt."

Holland made the comments recently in an interview with Hollywood Reporter, where he also added, “I’ve made Marvel movies and I’ve also made movies that have been in the conversation in the world of the Oscars, and the only difference, really, is one is much more expensive than the other.”
"But the way I break down the character, the way the director etches out the arc of the story and characters — it’s all the same, just done on a different scale. So I do think they’re real art," he further continued.
He also cited the examples of his MCU co-stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Robert Downey Jr, and Scarlett Johansson, who starred in both MCU films as well as 'Oscar-worthy' films. "When you’re making these films, you know that good or bad, millions of people will see them, whereas when you’re making a small indie film, if it’s not very good no one will watch it, so it comes with different levels of pressure,” the 25-year-old actor said, adding, "I mean, you can also ask Benedict Cumberbatch or Robert Downey Jr or Scarlett Johansson — people who have made the kinds of movies that are ‘Oscar-worthy’ and also made superhero movies — and they will tell you that they’re the same, just on a different scale. And there’s less Spandex in ‘Oscar movies."
Holland's comments earned him quite the flak online, as one Twitter user said, "The funniest thing about the scorsese/marvel beef is that marty wrote one mild article about the state of the film industry and then hasn't mentioned it since and mcu people are still so rattled by it that they keep insisting they're making REAL films as if scorsese cares."
Film critic Courtney Howard tweeted, "Ugh not this Marvel. Vs. Scorsese thing again. I can’t. My crops are dying."
A third user wrote, "asking martin scorsese “would you make a marvel movie” is elder abuse." A fourth user joked, "to be fair if i was dating zendaya i too would probably think i could take on martin scorsese."
