Although TikTok users are promoting the miraculous effects magnesium has on the body, other specialists are skeptical of their unreliable conclusions.

According to the National Institutes of Health, magnesium is a mineral that is present in abundance in the body and is necessary for the creation of energy as well as for the proper operation of the heart and muscles.

According to Insider, Melissa Gray recounted her experience using magnesium glycinate pills to treat her insomnia and anxiety.

“I’m a super anxious person and I’m also having this issue where I sleep a ton and I’m not feeling rested,” Gray said in the video seen more than 16.9 million times. “I took it for the first time on Saturday night, and I felt calm, and my brain felt fuzzy like I was ready to go to bed and then I woke up in the morning, feeling rested. I thought it was a fluke.”

What do experts say?

Dr Angela Neal-Barnett, a psychology professor at Kent State, told Insider that there is simply "no strong data" to support whether or not magnesium relieves anxiety. According to healthline, magnesium can also lower blood pressure, cut the risk of strokes, type 2 diabetes, and avoid migraines.

The University of Leeds looked at 18 research studies where participants took tests to see if there was a connection between anxiety and taking magnesium supplements. The review was titled 'The Effects of Magnesium Supplementation on Subjective Anxiety and Stress—A Systematic Review'.

According to a 2017 study by MDPI, "There is suggestive but unclear evidence for a positive effect of Mg supplementation in Moderate anxiety."
