3 injured as freight train derails after hitting rockslide in West Virginia, spilling diesel into river
SANDSTONE, WEST VIRGINIA: A rockslide along with tracks has caused the derailment of an empty coal train in West Virginia. The incident of Wednesday morning, March 8, has led to the injury of three crew members, confirmed CSX Transpiration. The company in a statement updated that four locomotives and 22 empty cars derailed in Summers County near New River.
It further added that the lead locomotive was carrying a conductor, an engineer, and an engineer trainee, caught fire and the crew members were being evaluated and treated. However, all reported injuries are non-life threatening, the company said.
CSX added that an unoccupied locomotive was partially in the waterway and an unknown amount of diesel fuel and oil spilled at its spot. At present, environmental teams were deploying containment measures.

'No danger to the public'
As per West Virginia Emergency Management Division, the derailment occurred in a remote area close to the south of Sandstone inside the New River National Park and Preserve, as per a CBS News report.
The reports claim that currently multiple state agencies are involved in monitoring the situation and said that public water systems downstream have been notified. They will now be keeping an eye on any potential threat and impact on public health. “No hazardous materials were being transported and there was no danger to the public,” said CSX.

In an unrelated incident, a train in Florida carrying over 30,000 gallons of propane fuel derailed on Tuesday, February 28, causing significant environmental concerns. As per authorities, the train went off-track while it was moving south in an industrial region to the north of Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport, reports MEAWW.
