Is Master Hongrou still alive?

As Qingming and Boya try to save the world from the demon serpent and investigate the death of Master Hongruo, they learn that the Princess has her mystic plans as she conspires with the Head of the Royal Guard, Master Heshou, to claim the demon’s power to grant him eternal life. After Master Nanjiang's (Jessie Li) sudden death, Qingming and Boya try to uncover the truth behind the conspiracy.

At the time of her death, Master Nanjiang told Qingming that “The Empress is...Princess”, which they later understand that the Empress had died some time ago and the Princess and Master Heshou are manipulating everyone by using their supernatural powers. It is also revealed at this point that Master Heshou was the one who killed Master Hongrou.

Qingming also learns that his master once traveled to The Imperial City, where he fell in love with the Princess, who had captured the demon serpent that gave her eternal life. The boom of eternal life has bound the Princess to live in the Imperial City, but with the help of Master Heshou, she tries to release the demon serpent so she can leave the city with him.

Qingming helps the Princess understand that his master always loved her, and to protect her, he has left his Spirit Guardian, who has always protected her. It turned out Master Heshou was, in fact, the Spirit Guardian left behind by Qingming's master.

After Qingming's master’s death at the hands of the demon serpent, Master Heshou was meant to die as he got all his energy from the master he served. When Princess learned that Master Heshou is dying, she helps him achieve eternal life by releasing the serpent who was living inside her body.

But when Princess learns the reality of Master Heshou's existence and how Qingming's master always loved her, she slashes her throat with Qingming’s master’s sword, Fangyue, which he named after her.

During the final scene, we see how Qingming and Boya have finally sorted out their differences and have become good friends. Boya even helps Qingming reach his place faster by using one of the magical arrows that guide him.

The scene then dissolves into an old cemetery where some Masters are chanting, and we see Master Hongruo taking a breath. It is not yet revealed if writer-director Guo Jingming would like to make a sequel from the acclaimed story saga, but if he does, then Master Hongrou’s waking up from the dead could be a great way to start the narrative.
