'This is absurd': 'The Voice' fans demands 'real' artists as Saweetie and Maluma join as Playoff Advisors
UNIVERSAL CITY, CALIFORNIA: NBC’s 'The Voice' started its next round on April 22. The Playoff Round selected who would advance to the live performances starting in two weeks and it saw the introduction of some new mentors, but people were not that enthusiastic.
John Legend appointed Colombian singer-songwriter Maluma as the playoff-round mentor for his five remaining talents. Each aspired to be one of the three vocalists chosen by John to participate in the live shows.
Saweetie joined Dan + Shay to offer advice and warm hugs to their team's last five performers.
On Instagram, fans have been trolling the advisors' arrival as they write, "Maluma? Lol even a latina (myself) knows, he has nothing to do on The Voice." Another user chimed in, "What is Maluma doing in The Voice? This TV program is coming to the end."
One user swore, "I’ve never heard of those two. So random." A fourth user agreed, "Saweetie for Dan & Shay is so random."
Another viewer commented, "I’ve never heard of any of these people…" One fan complained, "Seriously???? What about Brandy? Baby Face? Brian McKnight?? Real artist, real singers!!! What the heck I'd Maluma doing on THE VOICE!!!??? The Voice is changing a little too much!"
One user wondered, "I don’t get it ? A lot of artist that audition have more talent than Maluma and saweetie put together what advise can they give lol." One wrote, "Saweetie is literally a failed rapper? Her album failed and she’s just bad and why is she there? This is absurd."
Who is Maluma on 'The Voice' Season 25?
Real name Juan Luis Londoño Arias, Maluma is a Colombian singer-songwriter from Medellín who has grown to be a big figure in the Latin music scene. Maluma, who was born on January 28, 1994, began performing at the age of sixteen. His debut album, Magia, was released in 2012.
Even though it was favorably acclaimed, Maluma didn't truly attain widespread recognition until his sophomore album, "Pretty Boy, Dirty Boy," was released in 2015. The song "Pretty Boy, Dirty Boy" made its debut on the US Billboard Top Latin Albums at number one.
He then released three additional albums: "F.A.M.E." in 2018, "11:11" in 2019, and "Papi Juancho" in 2020. He's also no stranger to teamwork, which was helpful when he assisted 'The Voice' candidates.
Furthermore, he has shared the stage alongside Jennifer Lopez, The Weeknd, J Balvin, and Ricky Martin. He even appeared in the 2022 comedy "Marry Me" as JLo's co-star.
Among Maluma's most popular songs are "Felices los 4," a collaboration with Marc Anthony; "Hawai," which became even more popular when remixed by The Weeknd; and "Corazón." Additionally, he is a featured performer on Shakira's popular song, "Chantaje."
The first sound of Maluma's mother, father, and sister's names—Marlli, Luis, and Manuela—combines to form his stage name.
Who is Saweetie on 'The Voice' Season 25?
In 2016, Saweetie made her musical debut by posting freestyle videos to social media platforms like Instagram. With each of her independently produced and published songs becoming an internet sensation, Saweetie's fan base grew over time.
In 2017, she made her SoundCloud debut with "Icy Grl." Two years later, her song "My Type" peaked at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Her backstory is wholly original, yet it sounds more and more like the digital world we live in today, when everything is really a stage.
Saweetie has released a number of more songs in recent years, all of which are preludes to her impending first studio album.
She won Outstanding New Artist at the 2022 NAACP Image Awards, and in the meantime, she has racked up nominations for other awards, including Best Rap/Sung Performance and Best New Artist at the Grammys. She may now add Playoff Mentor to her extensive resume of achievements.
What does a Playoff Mentor do on 'The Voice'?
'The Voice' has a long history of using mentors. While the four coaches usually spend most of their time selecting and coaching their Artists as they battle to win the season, mentors may occasionally step in to lend a hand by providing fresh perspectives or in-depth knowledge of a different musical genre than their coach.
Keith Urban is a Mega Mentor for Season 25, which means he will move between teams. However, each club receives a Playoff Mentor throughout the playoffs.
'The Voice' Season 25 airs on Mondays at 8 pm ET on NBC
