'The Unicorn' Season 2 Episode 3 Preview: Can Wade overcome all the roadblocks in Shannon's birthday plans?

With most returning TV shows of the year picking up on the many crises of 2020, it was only a matter of time before 'The Unicorn' attempted to play the field too

Wade (Walton Goggins) and Shannon (Natalie Zea) might have been dating for all of two weeks, but they have already had a near-disaster first date managed right in time and have another one planned. But after a random mid-season break, as 'The Unicorn' returns with Episode 3 of Season 2, it looks like their second date will be more of a celebration as it's Shannon's birthday.

Of course, noting in Wade and Shannon's dating life comes easy and this time, it looks like Wade is struggling at the very basic first step of plans. According to the official synopsis of the episode titled 'It's The Thought That Counts', "After Forrest gifts a water gun to Noah, Ben and Michele quickly take it away; the group has a frank discussion about racial injustice; Wade tries to figure out how to celebrate Shannon's birthday since their relationship is so new."

With most returning TV shows of the year picking up on the many crises of 2020, it was only a matter of time before 'The Unicorn' attempted to play the field too. There's been no mention of the pandemic this season so far, but the CBS comedy has been back for only two episodes, so we'll let that slide.

That Ben (Omar Benson Miller) and Michele (Maya Lynne Robinson) are opening the scope for racial injustice is enough to hint that sooner or later, Covid-19 will make its presence known too. For now, however, the crisis at hand is the birthday situation.

With their first date already gearing towards such a disaster, it makes sense why Dave is so hyped about making Shannon's birthday celebrations special. As single parents, their dynamics match on that level of compassion for each other where they understand the minor details that play into their relationship, at such an early age. So planning for Shannon's birthday is more or less of a roadblock Wade will have to overcome.

He knows she enjoys a cozy night staying inside, but they have also planned a proper date night where they go to a fancy restaurant and enjoy quality time for themselves to get to know each other as partners outside of their identities as parents.

Shannon being a waitress at a cafe also means Wade can't just take her to any place and give her a mediocre celebration. Their relationship is also fairly new for grand gestures and proclamations of romance so he has to strike a fine balance between the two to woo the woman of his dreams. But based on what we have seen so far, the birthday also gives a really genuine excuse — a segue of sorts — into introducing the woman to his close-knit of friends.

Wade should just plan a birthday party for Shannon at his place, invite people over, and charm her with his taking charge and hosting capabilities the way she whipped up a dinner for their indoor first date. And eye for an eye but in the most romantic ways!

'The Unicorn' Season 2 airs on Thursdays at 9.30 pm only on CBS.
