'The Umbrella Academy' Season 2: Avengers are a lot like Hargreeves siblings, here's a list of similar characters
Netflix's 'The Umbrella Academy' is a rarity among superhero shows. Unlike the Marvel Cinematic Universe or even the DC Extended Universe and Arrowverse, 'The Umbrella Academy' is more of a family drama than it is an action series.
But that's not to say there isn't a ton of action involved. The Hargreeves siblings could give any superhero team a run for their money in terms of powersets and in many ways, they are just a more mature take on superhero squads like the Justice League and the Avengers. Don't believe us? Well, here's a list of each Umbrella Academy member and the Avengers who are most similar to them.
Luther Hargreeves — Captain America
The similarities between Luther / Number One / Spaceboy (Tom Hopper) and Captain America / Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) are staggering. They are both born leaders who always try to do the right thing, though Luther makes a lot more terrible decisions than Steve ever has. Plus, they were both exposed to serums that changed their lives in huge ways. Granted, Steve was transformed from a scrawny young man to a dashing super-soldier while Luther went from good-looking superhero to monstrous ape-man, but still.
Diego Hargreeves — Hawkeye
Diego / Number Two / The Kraken (David Castañeda) and Hawkeye / Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) is the easiest comparison on this list. They are both famous for their deadly aim, even though for Diego it's a superpower and for Clint, it's the result of years of training.
Allison Hargreeves — Scarlet Witch
Though her powers are vast and undefined, Scarlet Witch / Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) started out with the primary power of mind control in the MCU. And that's the exact same ability that makes Allison Hargreeves / Number Three / The Rumor (Emmy Raver-Lampman) so very dangerous. Also, they're both involved in weird romantic relationships with Wanda being in love with the android Vision (Paul Bettany) and Allison having a yet-to-be-fulfilled romantic interest in her brother Luther.
Klaus Hargreeves — Doctor Strange
On the surface, Klaus Hargreeves / Number Four / The Seance (Robert Sheehan) couldn't be more different from Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch). While Doctor Strange retains the no-nonsense attitude of a scientist, Klaus takes the term eccentric to its absolute limit. But that said, they are both people with powers rooted in the mystical and that's what makes Klaus the Doctor Strange of the Academy. Well, that and the fact that they both have awesome facial hair.
Number Five — The Winter Soldier
We don't have an Avenger in the MCU with the unique powers of Number Five / The Boy (Aidan Gallagher) but the Avengers do have the world's deadliest assassin on the team. Both Five and Bucky Barnes / The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) are living weapons who have shaped history through violence and death, although Bucky went through the decades the normal way instead of using unpredictable time-travel powers.
Ben Hargreeves — The Hulk
This one is a little tricky. We are still not a hundred percent certain what powers Ben Hargreeves / Number Six / The Horror (Justin H Min) has but from the flashbacks in Season 1, we do know that he is a powerhouse and he doesn't like using his abilities. That's actually pretty similar to Bruce Banner / The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) who is also one of the most powerful people on his team and yet uncomfortable with the use of his powers. Of course, there's the glaring difference that Ben is dead while the Hulk is basically immortal but as they say on 'Game of Thrones', "What is dead may never die".
Vanya Hargreeves — Captain Marvel
All the Umbrella Academy members are powerful in their own right but no one compares to the raw destructive ability of Vanya Hargreeves / Number Seven / The White Violin (Ellen Page). Like Captain Marvel / Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), Vanya is also the most powerful person on her team and she has displayed similar energy absorption powers. And much like Captain Marvel, the White Violin also appears on the scene last and causes massive destruction even though in Captain Marvel's case that's the destruction of aliens and in Vanya's, it's the destruction of Earth. Close enough, wouldn't you say?
'The Umbrella Academy' Season 2 will arrive on Netflix on July 31.
