Jimmy Fallon recalls how wife Nancy unknowingly ruined his plans when he decided to pop the question
The latest 'at-home' episode of 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon', which aired on Tuesday, April 14, saw the award-winning late-night talk show host tell the viewers the story about his engagement with Nancy Juvonen, his wife of 13 years.
The story came as part of the responses to the questions sent in by viewers of the show to Jimmy about his kids and wife on Twitter using the hashtag #AskTheFallons. Before beginning the segment 'Ask The Fallons' he mentioned that Nancy was behind the camera and is also producing the 'at home' edition for him and will be seen turning the tables and will be seen donning the hat of the "interviewer" and Jimmy was about to be her "interviewee."
Coming to the story, Jimmy recalls having the ring and everything in place as well as Nancy's father and brother's blessings. He was about to meet Nancy for dinner that night and had decided to do it after dinner at someplace that would be around for years instead of a restaurant that might become a "laser tag house" some years down the line. After an amazing 14-course meal that went on for almost four hours, he was at home with Nancy's brother on the phone all excited to know what happened.
After knowing that he couldn't do it, he suggested that they go for a couple of drinks and maybe he could slip it in one of her cocktails. Jimmy recalled taking his advice and asked Nancy if she wanted to go out but the latter had already called it a night. Cut to six months later and Jimmy was still looking for the right place to propose to his wife.
It wasn't until the time when they went to Nancy's parents' summer house in New Hampshire where it finally happened. He asked her out at the dock overlooking their lake house, for cocktails. With a Harry Nelson song playing in the background for setting up the mood, Jimmy remotely took out the ring from his pocket and started crying. "I'm a very emotional person," he said. On his knees, voice quavering, he asked and she obliged with their family cheering from inside the house after witnessing the beautiful proposal.
That was the story and now it was Nancy's chance to interview Jimmy. She asked him to name any three of his pet peeves and specifically mentioned that "this is the challenge for him - to pick only three." "Oh Really?" quipped Nancy in a metaphoric tone when Jimmy mentioned he doesn't think he has any.
He gave in later and spoke about his dislike for soft cheese to which Nancy revealed that even the thought of someone else eating soft cheese is repellent to the talk show host. "No No No, I am fine with people glopping that thing in their mouth" replied Jimmy.
