'The Sympathizer' Episode 6 Ending Explained: Captain's fate in jeopardy as he joins General's mission

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: HBO Max amps up the drama and intrigue in 'The Sympathizer' with Episode 6. General (Toan Le) is gearing up for his secret mission to reclaim his homeland while Captain (Hoa Xuande) is stuck between choices.
In 'The Sympathizer' Episode 6, when the General tells Captain that all the donations to his private army are legitimate and are taken into his non-profit organization, Captain embarks on a mission to trace the money.
It doesn't take him much time to discover that General is eventually being supported by Congressman Ned Godwin (Robert Downey Jr.) and the CIA.
Captain kills Sonny Tran in 'The Sympathizer' Episode 6
Captain gathers the evidence of CIA and Ned aiding General's mission. He joins forces with Sonny Tran (Alan Trong) to make it a national headline.
However, Captain's hate and envy for Sonny overpower him. Not only is he furious with Sonny for stealing his girlfriend, but he also envies him for choosing a side and living a burden-free life.
In a fit of rage, he pulls out his gun and kills Sonny. He then picks up the documents and posts them to the LA Times.
Sofia Mori confronts Captain in 'The Sympathizer' Episode 6
As the authorities begin investigating Sonny's murder, Sofia Mori (Sandra Oh) calls Captain to her residence.
She informs him that she lied to the cops that Captain was with her at the time Sonny was killed.
Captain believes that Sofia is trying to save him because she might believe he killed Sonny out of jealousy as an ex-boyfriend.
However, she breaks his delusion by informing him that she knows he is a spy and is also aware of his meeting with Sonny at his apartment on the day he was killed.
Captain joins General's mission in 'The Sympathizer' Episode 6
In the final moments of the episode, Captain meets General and expresses that he wants to join the mission too. His decision is driven by his desire to save his friend Bon (Fred Nguyen Khan) from what he believes is a "suicide mission".
After Captain's request to visit Vietnam is rejected by his handler, Man (Duy Nguyễn), he realizes that his only way to save Bon is by accompanying him by participating in the upcoming war.
Bon, Captain, and several other Vietnamese men get on a flight to Thailand to eventually launch an attack on the communists.
Though the fate of General's mission is a point of intrigue, at least we now know how Captain landed up in North Vietnam’s prison.
