CENTRAL EUROPE, EUROPE: The gripping political thriller 'The Regime' on HBO takes viewers on a journey inside a crumbling authoritarian regime.
Created by Will Tracy, the series is set in a hypothetical European nation where Chancellor Elena Vernham (Kate Winslet) fights to assert her authority.
However, with the arrival of disgraced soldier Herbert Zubak (Matthias Schoenaerts), she begins to be influenced by him, causing tension between her and her council and leading to several unwise decisions that further undermine her power.
Elena advocates reunification through Faban corridors
Elena, who is continuously struggling to break her country out of America's influence, experienced a surprising mix of emotions when she realized her nation was not making much noise on the global stage.
She also felt burdened by Herbert's persistent questioning, yet she hesitated to oppose his wishes as he had been instrumental in helping her overcome a dark phase of paranoia, during which she grappled with the fear of inheriting a lung disease.
However, things take a dramatic turn when she dreams of her father, who chastises her for poor decision-making and urges her to regain control.
The following day, she attends the council meeting and proposes a reunion with the Faban corridors to divert public attention and project a strong image globally.
Aware that Herbert would pose a challenge to her plans, she dispatched him along with the troops the guise of Faban Freedom Captain.
Elena Vernham gets Herbert Zubak arrested
Elena's plot to generate global buzz for her takeover of the Faban corridor succeeds, sparking an international uproar.
To expand her influence, Elena recognized the necessity of addressing the issue with Herbert. Upon Herbert's return, he notices a shift in Elena's demeanor towards him, starting with her failure to acknowledge the gift he had brought for her.
Secondly, his irritation escalated when he spotted Emil Bartos (Stanley Townsend) at the celebration party, and later overheard the host of the party ridiculing him.
He reaches his breaking point when he witnesses Elena delaying the implementation of the Land Reform Policy, infuriating him to the extent that he chokes her severely. His anger then escalates as he goes after Emil, viciously lashing out at him.
In the aftermath, Herbert is arrested, while Elena remains resolute in preserving her control.
