Contains spoilers for Season 3 of 'The Protector' on Netflix!

When the second season of 'The Protector' on Netflix ended, Istanbul was on the verge of a viral outbreak. Season 3 of the show begins with that as Hakan and Zeynep race against time to find the cure for the virus.

Enter Nisan -- the biomedical engineer the Immortals forced to create the virus. With the use of Hakan's brother, Levent's blood, Nisan is able to create the vaccine, just in time too as Zeynep was also infected. But if you thought the troubles for our heroes ended there, you are wrong because there's the mysterious seventh immortal, known as the Vizier who is intent on doing what Faysal and Ruya could not -- take Istanbul for his own.

The third season ramps up the action with a whole new mystery and as a treat for fans, we get some of the mythology behind the Protector's history. As Hakan tries to find out the identity of the Vizier, we get glimpses into the history of the first Protector, whose actions especially infuriated the big villain of the season.

If fans thought Hakan and Zeynep were going to have a smooth way forward as a couple, they would be wrong. Though new characters come into their lives and disrupt whatever relationship they think they had, the love and loyalty between Hakan and Zeynep are still there and for the third season in a row, we get to see these two great characters work together -- albeit, not without hiccups.

Of course, some things are predictable considering what we have seen happen before. As always, Hakan is too trusting and that paves the way for his downfall. Zeynep is told by a vision that she must end things with the Protector (Hakan), lest he chooses her over the safety of Istanbul.

It doesn't help, though Zeynep does fall in love with someone else. Burak might be annoying at first, but he is a valuable addition to the colorful list of characters which includes a whole new set of Loyals. The surprise ending sets up a whole new world (or old, depending on the way you look at it) for the show and should there be a fourth season (and we hope there is), it would be interesting to see how the show proceeds.

All episodes of Season 3 of 'The Protector' are now available to stream on Netflix.
