'Legacies' Season 1: 'The Originals' star Riley Voelkel teases her return to the vampire drama spin-off
Riley Voelkel played Freya Mikaelson on CW's 'The Vampire Diaries' spin-off 'The Originals' and she also told us what she thought about 'Legacies'.
Some earth-shattering news for 'Legacies' fans - aunt Freya may just make an appearance on 'The Originals' spin-off. Riley Voelkel, who starred alongside Danielle Rose Russell in CW's beloved show told Meaww exclusively that she definitely could pay a visit to the Salvatore School for the Young and the Gifted in the vampire show.
"I know she is living a happy life with her beautiful wife, and who knows, she may have to pay her niece a visit!" said the actress teasing a possible return. Now, if you aren't well versed with how things work in 'The Vampire Diaries' universe, let us explain. Not only are all of the three shows tied to one another and set in the same universe, but they also have recurring characters slip in and out of multiple storylines on the show.
'The Originals' series finale left Freya Mikaelson happily married to her werewolf wife Keelin while brothers Elijah and Klaus met a heartbreaking end. Now the fact that she was very close to Hope, her niece on the show who is also the lead for the recent spin-off, makes it all the more possible that she may appear on 'Legacies'. If Caroline Forbes may be coming back for one last hurrah, who is to say Freya won't?
She was Hope's confidante and friend and was the one who actually taught her most of what she knows. While everyone else in the family was busy fighting, it was auntie Freya who actually looked out for Hope. "I am so in awe of Danielle Russell," she said about Russell's performance of Hope on 'Legacies' and added, "She was incredible to work with and such a beautiful person. She has strength and class beyond her years and has made the perfect Hope. I couldn’t be more proud of her work on both 'The Originals' and 'Legacies'".
Russell has definitely elevated her performance on the spin-off with each episode and silenced any doubts about her not being able to carry the adoration of the massive fandom forward. On 'The Originals', even though the last season became a lot about her, the story still didn't give her the opportunity to bloom as the spin-off has. Not only has she shown what skills she has honed in front of the camera, but also brought a lot of depth to the character through her performance.
As for the 'Legacies' storyline, Voelkel's got her own verdict and it's probably the same as yours. When the series came out last year in October, a large part of 'The Originals' fandom wasn't happy with it. The reason was simple - it didn't feel as mature as its predecessor and reminded them a lot of 'The Vampire Diaries'. What they perhaps missed was the fact that 'Legacies' was meant to be a much younger show.
However, now that the show is halfway through its debut season, fans have come around thanks to the stellar storyline and performances. The show has become the perfect amalgamation of the things we've liked in both 'The Vampire Diaries' and 'The Originals'. Voelkel echoed similar emotions. "I love that 'Legacies' has taken this long-told story and made it into their own story. It's so well done and I know everyone will fall in love with these characters." We have, auntie Freya, we have.
