'The Mystery of DB Cooper': Release date, plot, trailer and all you need to know about HBO docu on hijacker
On the eve of Thanksgiving in 1971, on November 24th, a man calling himself Dan Cooper hijacked a Boeing 727 aircraft in United States airspace between Portland and Seattle. He had one demand — to be paid $200,000 (worth about $1,26,000 in 2019) in ransom. Once he got what he received, he parachuted off the airplane. The man, who came to be known as DB Cooper in the media, and in the nearly 50 years since the incident occurred, he has not yet been identified. Whether DB Cooper survived or not is not known, but authorities found no remains and a large part of the ransom money was still missing, even after a boy found a few of the ransom bills along the banks of the Columbia River in 1980.
The FBI maintained its investigation into Cooper for 45 years and his case file has grown to over 60 volumes in that period. To date, there has been no breakthrough. However, there have been many theories about Cooper's identity. As recently as last year, an Arizona man claimed that the suspect was someone that the FBI themselves had questioned: a US marine corps veteran who had assisted and helped refugees in Vietnam, Sheridan Peterson. A new HBO documentary delves into the identity of DB Cooper and will come to the network in November, just after the incident's 49th anniversary. 'The Mystery of DB Cooper' will premiere on HBO on Wednesday, November 25, at 8/8c. The documentary will be available to view on demand from Thursday, November 26.
Plot
The official synopsis for the documentary follows:
"The Mystery of DB Cooper' brings to life the stories of four individuals fervently believed by their family and friends to be 'DB Cooper', the mystery man who hijacked a 727 flying out of Seattle, traded the passengers’ lives for $200,000, and four parachutes, lept from the jet over some of Washington state’s roughest terrain, and was never heard from again. Almost 50 years later, the case continues to confound the FBI and inspire wild speculation as it remains the only unsolved airplane hijacking in United States history. The film draws from a combination of recreated and archival footage, as well as exclusive interviews with those most connected to the infamous case and its likeliest culprit, and explores how the heist inspired copycat hijackings around the world and elevated Cooper to 'legend' status before his plane even touched back down on land."

The documentary is produced by Anna Stephens, executive-produced by Morgan Matthews, edited by Paul Carlin, with original music by Tim Atack and Lindsay Wright.
