'The Midnight Club' on Netflix: Who is Spencer? The real reason Chris Sumpter's character was sent to hospice
In May 2020, it was announced an adaptation of Christopher Pike's young adult novel 'The Midnight Club' would be created for Netflix by Mike Flanagan and Leah Fong. Mike Flanagan who is the creator of 'The Haunting' franchise, created a mini-series in 2021 when he made the 'Midnight Mass' and is now continuing the 'Midnight' legacy with 'The Midnight Club'.
However, 'Midnight Mass' is adapted from the 1994 novel of the same name by Christopher Pike. The premise of the show is that a group of seven close terminally ill young adults resides in the Rotterdam Home hospice run by an enigmatic doctor. They meet at midnight every night to tell each other scary stories. One night they make a pact that the first one to succumb to their disease is responsible for communicating with the others from beyond the grave. After one of them dies, bizarre occurrences start to take place when the real story begins.

However among the nine main characters, is William Chris Sumpter's character, Spencer. Unfortunately, after receiving his HIV diagnosis, William Chris Sumpter’s character Spencer is forced to come out to his conservative family. His parents then kick him out of the house. Mark learns of Spencer’s situation through a friend and brings him to Brightcliffe. Even after all he’s gone through, Spencer remains as a vibrant member of the group and always the life of the party.
In an exclusive interview with Netflix's Tudum, William Chris Sumpter spilled many beans. He said, "Honestly, I was just trying to not show how bad I wanted it! Loved the script immediately, though, so it went quite smoothly." When he was further asked about his favorite moment from the show, he said, "It has to be stargazing with the rest of the cast listening to ’90s music."
William Chris Sumpter began his career at the age of 11 when he booked his first job as Tommy in the hit Broadway musical 'Matilda'. He began his on-screen career doing background work for shows like 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' and movies such as 'When They See Us'. He then began booking roles in short films like 'Brooklyn Love Stories' and 'NYC Dreams', which gave him an insight as to what it meant to work behind a camera, and now helps him to work in front of one.
'The Midnight Club' on Netflix is all set for its premiere on Friday, October 7, 2022, to give you that needed spooky feel in time for Halloween.
