'The Mandalorian' Episode 5 hits a low point for fans that not even planet-sized Easter Eggs can help
Spoiler alert for Episode 5 of ‘The Mandalorian’
Chapter 5 of the 8-part ‘The Mandalorian’ series, entitled ‘The Gunslinger,’ visited one of the most famous locations in ‘Star Wars’ history, where it all began. After a space battle damages his ship, the Mandalorian is forced to land on a planet known to ‘Star Wars’ fans everywhere - Tatooine, the planet where Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) grew up. The episode also heavily featured Mos Eisley, that wretched hive of scum and villainy, and the cantina booth that first introduced us to Han Solo (Harrison Ford). But not even that amount of fanservice could please fans who felt the episode’s standalone story was anything more than filler in a season already too short.
Many of the fans are still obsessed with Baby Yoda appearances, of course - the little green guy has become almost synonymous with the show itself. “I went to search for the latest episode of the Mandalorian and literally typed in "baby yoda" rather than the show's name,” joked a user on Twitter.
A lot of disgruntled fans have a lot less to joke about it, however, with some pretty harsh criticisms of the show's latest episode. "Wow ok. Ep 5 of the Mandalorian was really bad. An utterly pointless script that did nothing to move the story forward and some awful acting. The two episodes directed by Dave Filoni have had the worst performances. Not sure he's cut out for live action just yet...?" said a user.
Other fans seem to agree, with one saying, "Special effects looked unfinished and overall felt very fan-filmy." One user's opinion of the episode was especially harsh: "It's a good thing they didn't start the Mandalorian off with episode 5. I don't know if I would have made it to #2."
Following the similarly standalone Chapter 4, many fans are tired of what they feel are filler episodes, wanting more plot advancement for the show's limited first season. "How are there only 8 eps of Mandalorian but we've had 2 straight episodes of filler," laments a tweet.
While this sentiment seems to be common online, the final moments of the episode, teasing a mysterious new figure, has definitely captured people's attention. "#Mandalorian was a bit off this week.. but I have A LOT of questions about that last 8 seconds..." tweeted one user.
Hopefully, the mystery is just enough to keep people coming back for the next installment of the Mandalorian's adventures, although until the series rids itself of Baby Yoda, it's unlikely the fans can stay away.
The next episode of 'The Mandalorian' airs December 13, on Disney+.
