The Magicians’, Syfy’s fantasy series, based on the book series of the same name by Lev Grossman, is soon to return for its fifth season. There is a lot of excitement around the show and we have already discussed and speculated what’s in store for the main characters this season. It's a good time to revisit where season 4 left us.

The season 4 finale titled ‘No Better to Be Safe Than Sorry’ left viewers in a state of tears. Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph) died, sending the second Monster into The Seam and keeping Everett (Brian Markinson) from becoming a god.

It was a fast death, but nonetheless it left a hole in the hearts of many of the characters and all of the viewers. But how did it happen?

After using Margo Hanson’s (Summer Bishil) axes to trap the Monster and his Sister inside of the Incorporate Bonded-containers, Quentin, Alice Quinn (Olivia Dudley), and  William 'Penny' Adiyodi (Arjun Gupta) traveled to the Mirror Realm. There they learned the Mirror World had access to a place between the normal Verse and Anti-Verse, called The Seam.

They figured The Seam would be able to hold the Monster and his Sister. However, after Quentin threw the first Incorporate Bonded-container through the portal, into The Seam, Everett appeared to foil their plan. He threw stuff at the portal, making sure that Quentin was unable to send the second container through.

Quentin, who specialized in the Repair of Small Objects, attempted to repair the portal. For whatever reason, Quentin was unable to fully repair the portal before the container went through. The Seam portal then erupted, destroying Everett and Quentin's bodies. But not before Penny pulled Alice to safety.

Following his death, Quentin arrived in the Underworld and was greeted by Penny 40, who gave Quentin “the deluxe package” that allowed him to watch his own memorial service: A bonfire with the magicians around it, and Alice at the helm.

Quentin watched them grieve for him, saddened by how much he was missed. Alice may just be the person hit hardest by the death of Quentin -- they had, after all, just gotten back together before his fatal sacrifice, a sacrifice that returned magic to the world.

'The Magicians' Season 5 releases January 15, on Syfy.
