'The Last Kingdom' fans mourn Father Beocca's death, say show is definitely on par with 'Game of Thrones'
The fans of 'The Last Kingdom' are united (even if England still isn't on the show) about getting more people, especially 'Game of Thrones' fans, addicted to this epic show just like they are. One fan urged others to get to binge the show like he had, saying: "For all those who haven't watched the #TheLastKingdom but you love historical drama shows, then this show is a must-watch. A fast-paced, violent, and an epic tale set in early England. This show is definitely on par with GoT, even George R.R. Martin praised the show."
Another Twitter user echoed his thoughts, stating: "GoT and Vikings fans, if you haven’t watched @TheLastKingdom yet, you’re doing it wrong. Season 4 just dropped today. Enjoy the ride. Destiny is All." Some uber-fans thought that the show was even better than GoT. One user stated: "The Last Kingdom > GoT. I have spoken," while another wrote: "Is #TheLastKingdom better than #GameofThrones?? God d*mn right it is!!!" Another user remarked to those asking about the show: "If you like history, blood, betrayal, sex, and hot men, you'll like it."
Others rued the fact that the show was not being promoted enough. One fan tweeted: "Seriously this show is so underrated... it’s one of my favorites and I’m not sure why it’s not promoted as much as it should be..but it should be. I finished 10 episodes already," while another remarked: "Criminally. criminally underrated. this show fkn inspires me, man. the writing on this show solidifies why i want to be a showrunner one day. to make fkn art like this. fkn stellar."
But other fans, especially the ones who had seen the first three episodes, were to busy mourning the loss of another father figure in Uhtred's (Alexander Dreymon) life. One fan posted a picture of a woman collapsing, commenting: "Nooooo, not Father Beocca!", while another just wanted to the show to take back the tragic death, tweeting: "What just happened? UNDO UNDO #TheLastKingdom #Beocca
Another posted a picture of Steve Carrel weeping and wrote: "Please, not Father Beocca. I can’t do this." The death of Father Beocca, especially since he died saving youth Uhtred, was a heavy blow since he was a fan-favorite. After Lady Aelswith (Eliza Butterworth ) made him feel extremely unwelcome at court, he departed in a huff from Wessex to accompany Uhtred to conquer Bebbanburg.
If Lady Aelswith hadn't riled him up, he would still be safe, writing his saint memoirs. However, he also had tagged along to protect young Uhtred, a task which he died doing. One fan compared his death to Ragnar's, another towering influence on Uhtred, writing, "May you R.I.P fatha Beocca & Ragnar. y'all are the ones that kept Uhtred head on right."
Another fan quoted Uhtred from the show to show how big a loss Father Beocca's death was, tweeting: "I was moved that time when Uthred and Finan console each other upon losing Fr. Beocca," before quoting Uhtred from the show, saying: "Without Beocca, I have no home."
Indeed, in this season, Uhtred lost his last father figure and will now have to become a father figure himself to Aelesthan, the first king of united England. But that's in Season 5 and till then, it is a long wait "ars*lings", twiddling our fingers.
'The Last Kingdom' Season 4 premiered on Netflix on April 26.
