'The Good Doctor' Season 4 Episode 5: What 'fault' could get Shaun kicked out of surgery room like Morgan?

Shaun makes some pretty grave mistakes in the upcoming episode - the kind that leads us to believe he might be on the receiving end of some severe consequences

Dr Shaun Murphy can never catch a break, can he? After tackling the unknown virus that soon blows into a fatal pandemic, and also battling his own evolving relationship with his best friend-turned-roommate-turned girlfriend Lea, Shaun now has to worry about the fallacies of people he has undertaken as part of St Bonaventure's resident program. But even though it is his junior residents who cause a disaster in the upcoming episode, it will be Shaun facing the consequences because of a minor flaw in his judgment.

According to the official synopsis offered by ABC, Season 4's Episode 5, which will also be the winter finale of the show will see, "Dr Murphy question his decision to give the new residents autonomy when an intern's misdiagnosis has dire consequences; a patient has a ruptured cyst affecting key functions of her brain; Dr Morgan Reznick and Park bond over failed relationships."

Of course, that budding closeness between Morgan and Park is sure to hit many the wrong way, but it is Shaun we are very worried about because he is too good at what he does to be removed out of surgery rooms the way Morgan was in the previous episode. Still one look at the promo teaser for the episode reveals just why Shaun gets in trouble. Turns out Dr Aubrey Lym asks Shaun to take a backseat, or "back-off" to quote him, and allow the residents under him to take the final calls on patients. As it had been pointed out to Shaun in the previous episode, any drawback or failure on the junior resident's part is to be considered a fault of the senior resident guiding them, so Shaun has to take the blame when the patient at St Bonaventure suffered from a misdiagnosed ruptured cyst.

The trailer shows Aubrey asking Shaun to trust his understudies, and him saying he doesn't. But clearly, he allows them the pace Aubrey also demands from him, and therein lies the screw-up, that she, in as many words, calls Shaun's mistake too. Looking at the consequences Morgan had to suffer just for being a ruckus in the surgery room it's not hard to deduce that no matter how comforting and supporting Aaron Glassman is towards Shaun after his imminent failure, he too might be granted a similar fate. Unless his seniors realize this was an isolated incident and nothing more.

'The Good Doctor' Season 4 airs on Mondays at 10 pm only on ABC.
