'The Gift' Season 2 Ending Explained: Atiye and Erhan reunite but will their child save the world?
Spoiler Alert for 'Atiye'/'The Gift' Season 2
When the first season of Netflix's 'Atiye' aka 'The Gift' ended, the lead character, Atiye (Beren Saat) had gone to the cave in Gobekli Tepe. Her choice to bring back her adopted sister, Cansu (Melisa Senolsun) meant that Atiye was transported to another universe – one in which Cansu was still Elif and grew up with her brother, Erhan (Mehmet Gunsur). In the first season, it was Serdar Yilmaz (Tim Seyfi) who killed Cansu.
When Atiye was transported to the new universe, we learned that this is a world in which Atiye was never born because her parents, Mustafa (Civan Canova) and Serap (Basak Koklukaya) never met. However, in this world, Serap was more accepting of her powers. Her attempts to stop Serdar's company from digging at the site of Gobekli Tepe -- which in the new world had not been discovered yet -- put her in an asylum. But Serap had always seen Atiye in her dreams and much like her mother, Zuhre (Meral Çetinkaya) in Season 1, Serap serves as a guide for her daughter.
We also learn that Serdar had adopted Erhan and Elif when their parents died and brought them up as his own children. Serdar's unending appraisal of Erhan planted a complex in Ozan (Metin Akdulger), who years for his father's acceptance. Another change we see is that Ozan and Elif have been together for three years, but Ozan does not want to tell his parents because they grew up as siblings.
We learn a few things about Serdar in this season – he was approached by an organization and everything he did was because in the first world they promised to bring his wife back and in the second world, they promised to bring Ozan back (he had gone missing midway through Season 2 and his body was found later).
Much like in the first season, the new world's Serdar is determined to bring Atiye to the door in Gobekli Tepe after he shoots Erhan. However, this time around the character is much more humanized -- we understand his motivations for manipulating those around him. We have also seen during the season that Serdar has had breathing difficulties which Atiye explains is a bit of karma given that he strangled Cansu in the other universe.
When Atiye heals him, Serdar seems to have a change of heart and tells Atiye to go to the door. She needs to do this because her unborn child is the key to solving the problem of pregnant women dying and children not being born here. He says the organization he was working for did it because the earth was dying and humans were using too many resources.
The episode also simultaneously goes back to the universe we got familiar with in the first season. After being attacked by Hannah (Hazal Turesan), he wakes up in a hospital. He knows he has to find Atiye and he heads to the cave himself. Both of them make their way to an inner room where they find each other but Atiye tells him she has to go back because their daughter is the only way to save that universe.
We then see Atiye giving birth, surrounded by her mother, her grandmother, her aunt, and the redheaded woman who guided her in Season 1. However, what we see next -- and a callback to what Season 1 opened with -- is Atiye in a bloody white dress (what she gave birth in) after a hooded man who had taken her baby. This hooded man is later revealed to be Ozan, who is seemingly now working for the mysterious organization.
While this season showed us a lot more than the previous season, there is still a lot to be revealed. For one, we need to know what this mysterious organization is and what they want with Atiye's and Erhan's child. We also need to know where Ozan really stands. He seems like a bad guy with a conscience sometimes and we can sympathize with his situation given how his father treated him. However, Ozan might be the big villain for Season 3.
'Atiye'/'The Gift' Season 2 is now streaming on Netflix.
