'The Asunta Case' aka 'El caso Asunta' tells the tragic true story of Asunta Yong Fang Basterra Porto, a Chinese-born girl raised in Spain, who was found dead just shy of her 13th birthday in Teo, A Coruña, Galicia, Spain, on September 22, 2013.

The autopsy revealed she had been suffocated and had ingested over 27 Lorazepam pills on the day of her death, a dose far exceeding the maximum for an adult.

This case, known as the Asunta Basterra case, drew widespread attention as the investigation unfolded. Eventually, Asunta's adoptive parents, Alfonso Basterra and Rosario Porto, were convicted of her murder on October 30, 2015.

According to court records, they had been sedating Asunta with Lorazepam for months before they ultimately suffocated her and abandoned her body. Despite claiming their innocence, both parents were sentenced to 18 years in prison.

María del Pilar Peña Sánchez, known as Candela Peña, was born on July 14, 1973, in Gavà, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. She grew up as the only child of parents who ran a bar in Barcelona.

At the age of 4, she began learning dance in the city. After completing high school, she moved to Seville to pursue theater classes, eventually continuing her studies in Madrid.

Encouraged by Pedro Almodóvar, she published the novel 'Pérez Príncipe, María Dolores' in 2001.
