'The Affair' season 5 episode 4: Trevor celebrates his sexuality with perfect sass, refuses to be an 'elegant gay'

Trevor has had a hard time coming out and accepting his sexuality in the open, but now that he's out, he's not allowing anybody to tone down his gayness. Not even grandma Margaret!

This article contains spoilers for season 5, episode 4.

The fourth and most recent episode of Showtime's 'The Affair' season 5 packs a lot of things, and unloads even more. We see Noah's (Dominic West) fatherly instincts stepping up finally, as his kids battle their own forms of hell: homophobia, first period, and a reckless lover from the past. But in all of this, what stands out the most is Noah's son Trevor Solloway (Jadon Sand), being a sassy gay teen.

It is Halloween in season 5, episode 4 of 'The Affair' and Noah's ex-wife Helen (Maura Tierney) is an almost established interior decorator, dating the charismatic actor Sasha Mann (Claes Bang) who plays Noah's role in the film adaptation of his memoir, 'Decent'. And since it's Halloween, the newly out Trevor is embracing his sexuality with extreme vigor: flaunting cat-ear headbands and dressing up in sexy lace and garters belt as Dr. Frank-n-Furter from the cult classic Rocky Horror Show.

But there is a very, very evident problem: Trevor's grandmom, Margaret, who claims to be practically raising the kids now, with Helen being so busy with work and Sasha, decides to take a dig at Trevor's outfit choice. Being the conservative older woman she is, she doesn't mind her grandson being gay as long as he is the 'elegant kind'. She mentions it explicitly too when Trevor tells his father about his outfit for Sasha's party. "Oh for God's sake, Trevor, if you have to be gay, can't you be the elegant kind?" Ouch, grandma! Homophobic and/or transphobic much?

But worry not, Trevor's sass has been otherworldly in the newfound embrace of his sexuality. The spitfire that he is, Trevor snaps back at his grandmother's absurd and borderline offensive questions saying "You mean like grandpa?" The repertoire is equal parts hilarious and quite intriguing at the same time. Trevor might be a high school teenager but he really is not taking any more sh*t from anybody about how he should or should not go about being gay, and this is exactly the kind of sass we wholeheartedly welcome from the show! Helen's baby boy, indeed.

'The Affair' season 5 episode 4 aired on Sunday, September 15 at 9 p.m only on Showtime.
