'The 100' Series Finale: Was Transcendence just another City of Light? Fans say 'storyline made no sense'

Back in Season 3, A.L.I.E. was on a mission to get everyone to take a Flame-like mind drive and go into the City of Light, where, as you guessed it, there would be no more pain

Spoilers for 'The 100 Series Finale 'The Last War'

With the final episode of 'The 100' came the transcendence that we had been hearing about nearly all season. The primary villain of the seventh and final season was Bill Cadogan aka the Shepherd (John Pyper-Ferguson) who wanted to be the one to take humanity to the next step of evolution. What he interpreted as the "last war" was, in fact, wrong. It was a test as Jordan Green (Shannon Kook) rightly predicted.

Before Cadogan could take that test, Clarke Griffin (Eliza Taylor) shot him and ended up being the one to take the test. Unfortunately, she failed, but Raven Reyes (Lindsey Morgan) and Octavia Blake (Marie Avgeropoulose) rose up to save the day. As Raven convinced the being which had taken on the form of Abby Griffin (Paige Turco), Octavia convinced everyone to put down their weapons and to stop fighting. Together, Raven and Octavia unlocked transcendence.

Of course, Clarke did not get to transcend as she killed someone while the test was going on. However, we learned from faux Lexa (Alycia Debnam-Carey) that transcendence is a choice, and her friends chose to come back to be with her instead. Faux Lexa also mentions that in transcendence, everyone is at peace and that there is no pain?

Well, does that sound familiar to you? Because it does to most viewers. Back in Season 3, A.L.I.E. (Erica Cerra) was on a mission to get everyone to take a Flame-like mind drive and go into the City of Light, where, as you guessed it, there would be no more pain. Clarke argued then that it should be a choice and that might be the one difference here — that transcendence is a choice.

Nevertheless, fans are not happy that the final season seems to be a mere rehashing of Season 3, which even while being one of the best seasons of the show, did not need to be repackaged. One fan tweeted, "+4 seasons to become/transcend into a Groot without pain/eternal instead joined the A.L.I.E.s framework (City of Light) ALSO WITHOUT PAIN&ETERNAL #The100#MayWeMeetAgain." They also tweeted, "What difference between City of Light and Transcend?! Both are painless (Raven's fixed leg show us that) and eternal. So A.L.I.E. was right after all?! #MayWeMeetAgain #The100." Another wrote, "They literally just brought back the city of light and called it good, the whole transcendence storyline made no sense. #the100 #The100seriesfinale."

A fan tweeted, "The transcendence is the earlier beginning of the city of light. raven no longer has her brace, and before levitt became a light he said 'no pain' we wasted our f*****g time with this show. #The100." Another shared, "Can we talk about how transcendence was basically city of light??? Like the whole 'feel no pain' thing.. That’s exactly what A.L.I.E wanted... #The100 #the100leaked #Lexa #LexaDeservesBetter." A viewer opined, "This whole transcendence crap is eerily similar to the city of light except they still remember those they love. They couldn’t of come up with a better idea #The100."
