5-year-old Texas boy shoots younger brother dead after finding gun at home while mom was asleep
FORT WORTH, TEXAS: A four-year-old Texas boy has died after his older sibling allegedly found a gun at their home and fatally shot him while their mother was sleeping.
The tragic incident unfolded at a home on the 7700 block of Greengage Drive this past Sunday, September 15, when Truth Albright was shot by his five-year-old elder brother shortly before noon, according to Dallas Morning News.
Officers responded to the residence at around 11.45 am and rushed Truth to the Cook Children's Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead just over 45 minutes later, at around 12.30 pm.
The gun used in the shooting was found inside the home, though officials have not revealed what type of a firearm it is. Homicide detectives, as well as detectives from the crimes against children unit and the crime scene search unit, were seen processing the scene and conducting interviews later that same evening.
They blocked the street and cordoned off the two-story house where Truth's parents lived as they conducted their investigation.
Larry Davison, a resident of the neighborhood who lives several houses down, said he had never spoken to the people living at the property but claimed he often saw the two children playing outside.
He said the last time he had seen emergency vehicles on the street was when a house had caught fire five years ago. After an investigation, detectives who worked to determine if the shooting was accidental said that they would not file charges against Truth's parents "at this time".
A police spokesperson confirmed to the Daily Mail that the five-year-old boy's parents would not be facing any punishment in connection to the incident. "It has been determined that there will be no charges filed at this time," the spokesperson said. "It’s a very unfortunate situation that occurred."
Truth was one of three children who were shot on September 15 in Tarrant County alone. Arlington Police are reportedly also investigating the case of a six-year-old boy who was shot in the head by his brother, and an eight-year-old girl who was shot in the buttocks by a gun that was reported stolen.
