'This isn't political, it's public health and you won't have ANY customers if they're all dead'

At a time when the entire world is being expected to be extra careful and look after their personal hygiene to avoid contracting Covid-19, superstore chain Winn-Dixie seems to have some other plans. It's more or less accepted now that face masks are one of the most important requirements to avoid contracting and spreading the virus. Most public places have made it mandatory to wear masks. But the supermarket chain took a different route on that front — they decided not to join other large retailers as far as making masks mandatory in its stores goes.

The company claims that it is strongly encouraging its employees and associates to wear face coverings. But, as reported by Fox News, Winn-Dixie's parent company, Southeastern Grocers, will not make masks mandatory because it does not want to “cause undue friction between our customers and associates by regulating mask mandates,” said director of corporate communications Joe Caldwell. He was further quoted saying, that the company would strongly encourage state government officials to “lead the way” in creating such mandates. “We are always listening to our communities, and as the number of Covid cases rise, we are actively evaluating our policies so that every reasonable precaution is made to protect the health and safety of our people and our customers,” Caldwell added. On the other hand, one of the chain's biggest competitors in Florida, Publix, announced it would require face coverings beginning July 21. Other retailers such as Walmart, Target and CVS have also issued a similar mandate.

This decision of Winn-Dixie did not go down well with the internet. Users poured their anger on Twitter. “Aren't you struggling enough to keep business? This isn't political, it's public health and you won't have ANY customers if they're all dead,” tweeted a user. Another user said, “Every Winn-Dixie I’ve ever been in except for one has been gross and ghetto so no real loss.”  Another tweet stated, “Have you been in a Winn-Dixie? Coronavirus might be the safest thing you catch in there.” Some even joked about this decision saying, “@WinnDixie which aisle is Covid in? ALL AISLES.” Another user said, “I have a WINN DIXIE up the block and I bypass to go right to @Publix !! So no problem there... Dixie sounds racist anyway.”

Mostly, the users expressed their frustration over the supermarket chain’s stand on this issue. “Yes, they will shop there until they start dying at which point they will realize it was a mistake. Winn-Dixie will end up going out of business because of the stupid decision,” said a Twitter member. A bewildered user said, “I used to love Winn Dixie! Whats wrong with the south!”  Another opined, “So southeastern grocers don’t care about their employees allowing customers to be without a face mask. When all major retailers have made masks mandatory. Way to go Winn-Dixie. We will not be shopping at your store. Enjoy your Grim Reaper special.”
