Spoilers for 'Supernatural' Season 15 Episode 18: 'Despair'

This year has been one for oddballs - stuff that one would never imagine in their wildest dreams happening, coming to life. So why exactly 'Supernatural' fans couldn't see this coming, is a mystery. But then again knowing some people's vehement opposition of the idea that angel Castiel and cursed hunter Dean Winchester are in love beyond a platonic level, makes sense. Trust the showbosses to however go out with a bang by giving fans exactly what they need: an admission from Cas's end that he truly loves Dean, just moments before he gets sucked in by the Empty. This looks like a final goodbye from the character. But the real question is did "Destiel just become canon?"

The emotional episode saw Jack sucked into the Empty by Billie who demands God's death book in exchange for his life. Sam complies, and Jack is sent back, but while Billie is reading the new ending, Dean attacks her, somewhat leaving her injured. They follow her to death's library to kill her as it becomes clear Billie is doing all of this to seek vengeance by killing Dean, but she is all-powerful. Cas and Dean, who team up to vanquish Billie, can be seen hiding in room when Cas has the epiphany.

Remembering his dead with the Empty, where he would be sucked in if he truly feels happiness, Cas looks at Dean and belts out his emotions in what becomes a giant tear-jerking moment. Ever since he pact, Cas has wondered “what my true happiness could even look like,” he tells Dean. “I never found an answer because the one thing I want is something I know I can’t have. But I think I know now happiness isn’t in the having. It’s in just being.” Cas follows it up noting no matter how destructive and angry, Dean's always been driven by love.

Cas calls Dean the “most caring, selfless, loving human being”. “Knowing you has changed me. Because you cared, I cared,” Cas continues. “I cared about the whole world because of you. You changed me, Dean.” When Dean asks, “why does this sound like a goodbye”, Cas finally admits the inevitable: "I love you". All he says is "Goodbye, Dean”, as the entity absorbs both him and Billie, thus leaving viewers shocked, torn, tormented and every bit in tears. For years the fandom has begged for this moment, and while it's unfair that we didn't get more of Destiel, it's a pleasant and welcoming development for sure.

Taking it to Twitter, fans expressed their shock over this admission of feelings. "As if 2020 wasn't weird enough. In the middle of all this election shit Destiel just became canon? I am 14 again, confused, and crying. This year needs to end," wrote a very frustrated fan. "REMEMBER HOW WE ALWAYS SAID “imagine how the internet would break if deancas goes canon” AND NOW IT’S FINALLY HAPPENING. THEY WENT CANON," another chimed in.

For others, it got more sentimental with the significance of it all. "Tomorrow is my birthday and I got Destiel as canon. Thank you @mishacollins for putting yourself fully into Castiel. Throughout the years you have been a light in an otherwise dark world," declared a fan. "Destiel is canon, but I'm still a clown, cause I was hoping that Cas will keep living," wrote another, speaking for the entire fandom. Some had complaints about the sequence too, as a fan wrote: "SPN SPOILERS ALSO WHY COULDNT THEY JUST KISS?!? LITERALLY ALL THE CW SHOWS R GAY BUT SPN? THE ONE MOMENT WE CAN MAKE DESTIEL CANON?! IM DEPRESSED AND PISSED OFF!!" The biggest epiphany was probably to this user who shared "A year ago I probably would have believed that a pandemic would happen over Destiel being canon. I shall never question God again."
