Spoilers for Season 15 Episode 17: 'Unity'

Like most episodes where Jack (Alexander Calvert) is suffering some kind of physical or emotional distress, Season 15's Episode 17 also saw the reason behind his woes be the one and only Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles). Despite the demon hunter's earnest efforts to blow up God, aka Chuck (Rob Benedict) to pieces, things did not go according to plan. It soon became inevitable towards the end of the episode to save Jack as Chuck explained all of this was part of a story he had written, with nobody else having a say in it. He warned Winchester that they now have to watch Jack die; but as the scene cuts to black, the last we see of Jack is him getting ready to explode. It looks like he is on the brink of exploding himself, true to Billie (Lisa Berry)'s prophesied deal, but fans believe more than fate, it's Dean's emotional breakdown and daddy issues propelling Jack towards such a sacrifice.

Among Dean's many outbursts in the latest episode, one saw him confess he doesn't really care if Jack lives or dies as long as Chuck is taken out in the process. Unbeknownst to Dean, Jack is sitting right behind him and hears what he has to say. No amount of clarifying that he didn't need to hear what Dean said helps the situation as that makes Jack pretty deadset on following his fate and what it demands of him. Later, when Sam (Jared Padalecki) tries to bargain with Dean, he once again makes it pretty evident that there's nothing he cares more about than having their God dead. No amount of cutting a deal would replace that agenda. He keeps insisting they have known Jack is going to die so now he just has to fulfill this task, which is insensitive and absolutely uncalled for. This is something that fans blame for Jack's final moments in tonight's episode.

Taking it to Twitter, viewers called out Dean's toxic behavior, blaming it on his daddy issues. "This episode really brought to a head something that has been cracking me up all season: they can say it's about family, or free will, or love, or whatever, but we all know what #Supernatural is really about when you boil it down: daddy issues," shared a viewer.

Another user also noted how problematic things got with Dean's behavior, tweeting: "Dean wanting jack dead and pulling a gun at sam was so out of character, i hate this show."

The other heavily criticized aspect of this episode was Dean actually pulling a gun at Sam when the younger Winchester insists on saving Jack. Some fans found this pretty inexcusable; "If Dean's ramped up anger was to make us less shocked when he pulled the gun on Sam... it didn't work. The whole Chucks ending brother against brother thing... it was anti climatic and forced. It made me feel even more WTF IS THIS BS."

Some tried to explain how this was all Chuck's story and tried excusing Dean's words saying he was under the evil God's influence. "I knew dean wouldn't say shit like jack wasn't family if he wasn't controlled by chuck, i knew it !!!!" wrote a user.

Others just tried to find a middle ground in all of this and explained Dean's behavior saying, "15 years + and Dean Winchester is finally having an entire emotional breakdown."

'Supernatural' Season 15 airs on Thursdays at 8:30 pm only on The CW.
