Supergirl has had a tough time in Season 5. Apart from battling the multiversal 'Crisis' and the mysterious Leviathan, her friendship with Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) is on the rocks.

Ironically, Kara (Melissa Benoist) has mostly been on the sidelines of the season, while Lena has taken center stage.

Overall, the show has been going through several ups and downs in this season, as it had a long period of decline in ratings before stabilizing, leading to the speculation whether the show would be canceled entirely.

However, ardent fans' prayers were heard, and the show has been renewed for a sixth season. And to be fair, 'Supergirl', despite its shaky phases, deserves another season. Season 5 proved that the show could deliver in action, as well as emotion.

The emotional core of season five was the re-examination of Lena Luthor's fractured trust issues. We saw the broken and betrayed woman behind the ice-cold mask.

The woman, who felt betrayed by her two closest friends Andrea Rojas and Kara, took matters into her own hands this time and steered the season forward.

She emerged as such a promising character that protagonist Kara, without these shades of grey, seemed rather pale in front of her.  Lena Luthor is an unusual character and possesses more depth than others on the show.

What does the future hold for her and Kara's friendship? Now that would be interesting to see. When they're together, the actresses bring out the best of both their characters and so much more could be explored in this area, without being repetitive of course.

And then there was Acrata, which made the comic book nerds happy. Andrea Rojas emerged as Acrata, unwillingly, of course. Initially, it seemed as if Andrea was the real villain, but she obviously wasn't and is revealed to be working for the terror organization Leviathan against her will.

The introduction of Leviathan into the show added to the intrigue, even though the organization itself and the leaders came across as rather flat and uninteresting.

Currently, Supergirl is battling the deadly Crisis and needs to save the universe. How she manages to do so, remains to be seen.

Season 5 of 'Supergirl' demonstrated that the show was best when it delved into personal relationships and examination of the greys in people's characters.

Despite weathering some rough moments, the show deserves a new season as there are more villains around the corner to be dealt with. And, it would be great if Supergirl herself was given more depth, rather than just being a paragon of goodness.
