Steve Bannon, former US President Donald Trump's former adviser, told the House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, insurrection on Saturday, July 9, that he is now willing to testify, preferably at a public hearing. Previously, the Jan 6 committee had put the blame directly on Donald Trump entirely. This opportunity could help the committee learn valuable insight into the alleged Trump attempt to overrule the government.

As per the letters obtained by The Guardian, Bannon discussed the time and place for an interview, after Trump mentioned in a letter that he would waive executive privilege if he reached an agreement to testify. "When you first received the Subpoena to testify and provide documents, I invoked Executive Privilege. However, I watched how unfairly you and others have been treated, having to spend vast amounts of money on legal fees, and all of the trauma you must be going through for the love of your Country, and out of respect for the Office of the President," wrote Trump in the letter. He continued, "Therefore, if you reach an agreement on a time and place for your testimony, I will waive Executive Privilege for you, which allows you to go in and testify truthfully and fairly, Unselect Committee (January 6 Committee) of political Thugs and Hacks, who have allowed no Due Process, no Cross-Examination, and no real Republican members or witnesses to be present or interviewed."

Trump's letter also said, "It is a partisan Kangaroo Court." With Trump willing to waive executive privilege if Bannon and the committee can secure an agreement, allows the one-time strategist to the former United States president to opt for a public hearing approach, which, by the way, is Bannon's preference. However, it is understood that he would go for a closed-door, transcribed interview. The letter explains that he is now willing to comply with the subpoenas he received in 2021. With this new development, the January 6 committee can take a different turn. However, the Internet is split by this announcement.

Former Trump Administration White House advisor Steve Bannon gives a brief statement as he arrives to turn himself in at the FBI Washington Field Office on November 15, 2021 in Washington, DC. Bannon was charged on Friday with two counts of contempt of Congress after refusing to comply with a subpoena from the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The Internet slams Steve Bannon's ploy

One user wrote, "Bannon wants his own special treatment from the January 6 committee — going straight to a public hearing where he can grandstand and refuse to answer questions. Wrong. He must be treated as any other witness: private hearing first to determine if he’s truly cooperative." Another user said, "Count me as a skeptic that Steve Bannon will testify to the J6C. He'll insist on ground rules that they'd be crazy to permit, and they're not crazy. And of course it's a ploy from his standpoint to help him in his trial, scheduled to being in a week."

A certain person highly disappointed with Bannon said, "Good time to remind folks that Steve Bannon is one of the most dangerous people on the planet. He sees the world like Trump but unlike Trump he is very smart. Anything Bannon does has an agenda and one should never turn their back on him in person or in any kind of process." Another user tweeted, "1/2 Given Bannon's clear statements over time that he wants to burn all of government down there is no reason to treat this like a good faith offer. As with all other witnesses, he should have to speak privately with the committee, under oath, first to test his truthfulness."

One user who strongly believes that Bannon will lie in a public hearing tweeted, "If you ask me, Steve Bannon’s testimony should NOT be public since he’s likely going to lie through his teeth. Who agrees?"
