'Soulmates' Episode 4 Preview: What's stopping Bill Skarsgård's Mateo from meeting his perfect match?
After fizzling marriages, raging vendetta and adventurous open relationships, AMC's 'Soulmates' now projects its 'Black Mirror' type horrors on the woes of casual flings in its upcoming Episode 4, 'Layover'. Our favorite Pennywise, Bill Skarsgård, dons the cap of Mateo in this episode and the handsome hunk is on his way to meet his scientifically tested soulmate, who lives all the way in Columbia. But there's a bump on the road, a blimp in their magical fairytale when Mateo comes across yet another adventure during the titular layover in Mexico — something that hinders his journey to his designated soulmate.
According to the official synopsis provided by AMC, “Mateo and Jonah meet at a bar and immediately hit it off; Mateo is furious when he discovers that Jonah stole his passport, sabotaging his chance to fly to Colombia to meet his soul mate the next day; they go on a wild adventure to get it back.” With a synopsis almost revealing the entirety of the plot, goes without saying that Jonah is the massive hindrance between Mateo and his soulmate. It is however the 'San Junipero'-esqe rendezvous that the synopsis teases that captures the intrigue.
The trailer hints at Jonah (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett) taking Mateo on a full escapade that starts with sex. Once Mateo's fanny pack is stolen, he goes on a bender with Jonah, with the latter taking him to a tarot card reader, an eerie warehouse with tarps, and also a raving nightclub. The time they spent together is a clear indication of an adventure you make last minute, meaning it ends up leading to something that definitely takes up enough of Mateo's time to stop him from seeking his soulmate.
There's also the interesting prospect of Jonah turning up to be Mateo's actual soulmate. Over the episodes, we have seen the show's concept debunk the sanctity of a scientifically tested soulmate, so perhaps Mateo and Jonah's adventure is yet another stepping stone towards the flag that basically says a giant "eff you" to these tests. That science can solve the woes of love is a fantasy people have indulged in for long, but more often than not, tales like Jonah and Mateo prove there is nothing that can solve the mysteries of the heart.
'Soulmates' airs on Mondays at 10 pm only on AMC.
